Sterically hindered phenyl bis(naphthyl)phosphites and compositions thereof

Claim 2

A hindered phenyl bis(naphthyl)phosphite having the formula ##STR10## wherein

Claim 3

+ is t-butyl or t-pentyl; R 1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 9 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, halogen, an alkoxy radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, phenyl, a t-alkyl radical containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and a ##STR11## where R 6 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms.

Claim 4

+ is t-butyl or t-pentyl; R 1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 9 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, halogen, an alkoxy radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, phenyl, a t-alkyl radical containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and a ##STR11## where R 6 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms.

Claim 5

A phosphite of claim 1 wherein + is t-butyl, R 1 is hydrogen, a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the ##STR12## wherein R 6 is methyl or ethyl.

Claim 6

A phosphite of claim 2, 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methylphenyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite.

Claim 7

A phosphite of claim 2, 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite.

Claim 8

A phosphite of claim 2, 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-n-butyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite.

Claim 9

A composition comprising organic materials subject to degradation and stabilizing amounts of hindered phenyl bis(naphthyl)phosphites having the formula ##STR13## wherein + is t-butyl or t-pentyl; R 1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 9 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, halogen, an alkoxy radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, phenyl, a t-alkyl radical containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and a ##STR14## where R 6 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms.

Claim 10

A composition comprising organic materials subject to degradation and stabilizing amounts of hindered phenyl bis(naphthyl)phosphites having the formula ##STR13## wherein + is t-butyl or t-pentyl; R 1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 9 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, halogen, an alkoxy radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, phenyl, a t-alkyl radical containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and a ##STR14## where R 6 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms.

Claim 11

A composition of claim 6 wherein + is t-butyl, R 1 is hydrogen, a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the ##STR15## radical wherein R 6 is methyl or ethyl.

Claim 12

A composition of claim 7 wherein said organic material is a polymer and the phosphite is selected from the group consisting of 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methylphenyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite, 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite and 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-n-butyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite.

Claim 13

A stabilizer composition for organic materials comprising (1) hindered phenyl bis(naphthyl)phosphites having the formula ##STR16## wherein + is t-butyl or t-pentyl; R 1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 9 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, halogen, an alkoxy radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, phenyl, a t-alkyl radical containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and a ##STR17## where R 6 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms; and (2) hydroxyphenylalkyleneyl isocyanurates of the formula ##STR18## wherein R' is a hydroxyphenylalkyleneyl radical of the formula ##STR19## where m is 1 to 4, r 1 is an alkyl radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms and is positioned immediately adjacent to the hydroxy group on the ring; r 2 , r 3 , and r 4 are hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms; and R" and R'" are hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or are the same as R'.

Claim 14

A stabilizer composition for organic materials comprising (1) hindered phenyl bis(naphthyl)phosphites having the formula ##STR16## wherein + is t-butyl or t-pentyl; R 1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 9 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, halogen, an alkoxy radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, phenyl, a t-alkyl radical containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and a ##STR17## where R 6 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms; and (2) hydroxyphenylalkyleneyl isocyanurates of the formula ##STR18## wherein R' is a hydroxyphenylalkyleneyl radical of the formula ##STR19## where m is 1 to 4, r 1 is an alkyl radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms and is positioned immediately adjacent to the hydroxy group on the ring; r 2 , r 3 , and r 4 are hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms; and R" and R'" are hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or are the same as R'.

Claim 15

A stabilizer composition of claim 9 wherein in (1) + is t-butyl, R 1 is hydrogen, a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the ##STR20## radical wherein R 6 is methyl or ethyl, and in (2) R" and R'" are equal to R', i.e., all the R groups are hydroxyphenyl-alkyleneyl radicals, and r 1 is a t-alkyl radical containing from 4 to about 12 carbon atoms, r 2 is an alkyl radical containing from 1 to about 12 carbon atoms, r 3 and r 4 are hydrogen, and m is 1.

Claim 16

A stabilizer composition of claim 10 wherein (2) has the formula ##STR21## where n is 4 to 8.

Claim 17

A stabilizer composition of claim 11 where (2) is 1,3,5-tris(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)isocyanurate.

Claim 18

A stabilizer composition of claim 12 wherein (1) is selected from the group consisting of 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methyl phenyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite, 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite, and 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-n-butyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite.

Claim 19

A composition comprising organic materials subject to degradation and stabilizing amounts of (1) hindered phenyl bis(naphthyl)phosphites having the formula ##STR22## wherein + is t-butyl or t-pentyl; R 1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 9 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, halogen, an alkoxy radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, phenyl, a t-alkyl radical containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and a ##STR23## where R 6 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms; and (2) hydroxyphenylalkyleneyl isocyanurates of the formula ##STR24## wherein R' is a hydroxyphenylalkyleneyl radical of the formula ##STR25## where m is 1 to 4, r 1 is an alkyl radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms and is positioned immediately adjacent to the hydroxy group on the ring; r 2 , r 3 , and r 4 are hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms; and R" and R'" are hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or are the same as R'.

Claim 20

A composition comprising organic materials subject to degradation and stabilizing amounts of (1) hindered phenyl bis(naphthyl)phosphites having the formula ##STR22## wherein + is t-butyl or t-pentyl; R 1 is hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 9 carbon atoms, a cycloalkyl radical containing 3 to 6 carbon atoms, halogen, an alkoxy radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms, phenyl, a t-alkyl radical containing 4 to 8 carbon atoms, and a ##STR23## where R 6 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms; and (2) hydroxyphenylalkyleneyl isocyanurates of the formula ##STR24## wherein R' is a hydroxyphenylalkyleneyl radical of the formula ##STR25## where m is 1 to 4, r 1 is an alkyl radical having 1 to 18 carbon atoms and is positioned immediately adjacent to the hydroxy group on the ring; r 2 , r 3 , and r 4 are hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms; and R" and R'" are hydrogen, an alkyl radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms, or are the same as R'.

Claim 21

A composition of claim 14 wherein said organic material is a polymer, in (1) + is t-butyl, R 1 is hydrogen, a primary, secondary or tertiary alkyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms and the ##STR26## wherein R 6 is methyl or ethyl and in (2) R' and R'" are equal to R", r 1 is a tertiary alkyl radical containing 4 to 12 carbon atoms, r 2 is an alkyl radical containing 1 to 12 carbon atoms, r 3 and r 4 are hydrogen, and m is 1.

Claim 22

A composition of claim 15 wherein (2) has the formula ##STR27## where n is 4 to 8.

Claim 23

A composition of claim 16 where (2) is 1,3,5-tris (3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)isocyanurate.

Claim 24

A composition of claim 17, wherein said polymer is a polyolefin and (1) is 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-methylphenyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite.

Claim 25

A composition of claim 17, wherein said polymer is a polyolefin and (1) is 2,4,6-tri-t-butylphenyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite.

Claim 26

A composition of claim 17, wherein said polymer is a polyolefin and (1) is 2,6-di-t-butyl-4-n-butyl bis(3,6-di-t-butyl-2-naphthyl)phosphite.
