Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 65 words
A process for polymerizing water miscible monomers which process comprises (1) contacting an aqueous phase containing a water miscible monomer with an initiating amount of an initiator containing a metal borohydride and a metal ion that can be reduced by the borohydride and (2) subjecting the resulting aqueous phase to conditions of aqueous phase polymerization sufficient to polymerize the monomer to form a water-soluble polymer.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 65 words
A process for polymerizing water miscible monomers which process comprises (1) contacting an aqueous phase containing a water miscible monomer with an initiating amount of an initiator containing a metal borohydride and a metal ion that can be reduced by the borohydride and (2) subjecting the resulting aqueous phase to conditions of aqueous phase polymerization sufficient to polymerize the monomer to form a water-soluble polymer.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 50 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the initiator is a redox initiator containing a free radical generating oxidizing agent, a metal borohydride and a metal ion that can be reduced by the borohydride to an oxidation state from which the reduced metal ion can be oxidized by the oxidizing agent.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 14 words
The process of claim 2 wherein the metal borohydride is an alkali metal borohydride.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 11 words
The process of claim 3 wherein the alkali metal is sodium.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 12 words
The process of claim 4 wherein the metal ion is cupric ion.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
The process of claim 5 wherein the monomer is acrylamide or a mixture of acrylamide and at least one other water miscible monomer.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process of claim 5 wherein the monomer is acrylamide, acrylic acid or a mixture containing acrylamide and acrylic acid.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 19 words
The process of claim 5 or 6 wherein the aqueous phase is the disperse phase of a water-in-oil emulsion.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process of claim 8 wherein the oxidizing agent is a free radical generating peroxygen compound.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 15 words
The process of claim 9 wherein the peroxygen compound is an organic peroxide or hydroperoxide.
