Fiber-forming melt-spinnable copolyesters that exhibit optical anisotropy in the melt consisting essentially of Units I, II, III and IV having the structural formulas: ##STR2## wherein said polyesters comprise at least about 10 mole % of Unit I, at least about 10 mole % of Unit II, from about 40 to 70 mole % of Unit III and from about 2.5 to 15 mole % of Unit IV, the number of dioxy units in the polyester being substantially equal to the number of dicarbonyl units.
