Abstract
Abstract As silver is the most expensive individual component in photographic film, it is desirable to reduce the quantities of silver in such materials. The addition of a certain class of phenolic derivatives has been found to enhance the contrast generated by dyes in color photographic emulsions. Emulsions containing these phenolic compounds can use less silver and produce the same optical density as emulsions with higher silver concentrations.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
54 words
A color photographic silver halide emulsion in a layer comprising a hydrophilic colloid, silver halide, and an oil droplet dispersion of a anilino-5-pyrazolone color photographic coupler, wherein said layer also contains an effective amount of a contrast enhancer of the formula: ##STR8## wherein R is an alkyl group of 4 to 20 carbon atoms.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
15 words
The emulsion of claim 1 wherein R is an alkyl group of 6-20 carbon atoms.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
17 words
The emulsion of claim 1 wherein R is an alkyl group of 8 to 20 carbon atoms.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
29 words
The emulsion of claims 1, 2 or 3 wherein said contrast enhancer is present in an amount which provides a ratio of enhancer/color coupler of between 0.4/1 and 1.5/1.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
101 words
The emulsion of claims 1, 2 or 3 wherein said pyrazolone color coupler has the formula: ##STR9## wherein Y is a halogen substituted phenyl ring, Z is a splitting-off group which is released from its attached position when the coupler couples with an oxidized aromatic primary amine color developing agent, W is a hydrophobic ballasting group, X represents a group selected from the class consisting of alkyl group, aryl group, alkoxy group, aryloxy group, N-substituted amino group, amido group, halogen atom, hydroxyl group, cyano group or nitro group, and V represents hydrogen, or a group as defined for X or W.
