Abstract

Abstract An optical disc of the type having a thermally deformable recording layer overlying a reflectively surfaced support features a crenelated disc support surface having grooves of predetermined depth and interleaved lands arranged in a spiral or concentric pattern. The recording layer's outer surface is nominally planar so that the differences in thickness between "over-land" and "over-groove" portions thereof impart high phase-shift contrast to light of a given read wavelength.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 82 words
In an optical disc of the type having a recording stratum including a thermally deformable recording layer overlying a reflectively surfaced support, the improvement wherein said support surface is crenelated, having a plurality of substantially continuous and uniform-depth grooves and interleaved lands arranged in a spiral or concentric pattern, and said recording stratum has a nominally planar outer surface whereby the thickness of recording stratum portions respectively overlying grooves and lands of said support surface differ in accordance with said groove depth.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 82 words
In an optical disc of the type having a recording stratum including a thermally deformable recording layer overlying a reflectively surfaced support, the improvement wherein said support surface is crenelated, having a plurality of substantially continuous and uniform-depth grooves and interleaved lands arranged in a spiral or concentric pattern, and said recording stratum has a nominally planar outer surface whereby the thickness of recording stratum portions respectively overlying grooves and lands of said support surface differ in accordance with said groove depth.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
The invention defined in claim 1 wherein said recording stratum is substantially transparent to light of a given read-wavelength and the thickness difference between the over-land and the over-groove portions of said recording stratum is such as to provide a high phase difference between light of said read-wavelength reflected from such respective portions.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 95 words
The invention defined in claim 1 wherein said recording layer has optical constants such that the plot of relative phase-shift to recording stratum thickness variation with respect to light of said read-wavelength exhibits first and third thickness zones of relatively gradual slope on either side of a second thickness zone of relatively rapid slope and wherein the thickness of said recording stratum is such that the thicknesses of said over-land portions of said disc are proximate such a first thickness zone and the thickness of said over-groove portions are proximate such a third thickness zone.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 59 words
The invention defined in claim 3 further comprising a plurality of discrete information pits which are formed in said recording layer generally over said groove portions of said disc and which have a predetermined depth such that the thickness of the recording stratum under said pits and aligned with a groove portion therebeneath, is proximate said first thickness zone.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 47 words
The invention defined in claim 4 wherein the nominal thickness of said recording layer and the depth of said pits are such that the thickness of the recording stratum under said pits and aligned with land portions of said disc also is proximate said first thickness zone.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 81 words
In an optical disc of the type having a recording stratum including a thermally deformable recording layer overlying a reflectively surfaced support, the improvement wherein said support surface is crenelated, having a plurality of continuous, uniform-depth grooves defining radially-spaced spiral or concentric track regions and with interleaved land regions of uniform height, and said recording stratum has a nominally planar outer surface whereby the thickness of recording stratum portions respectively overlying the track regions and the land regions are predeterminedly different.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 81 words
In an optical disc of the type having a recording stratum including a thermally deformable recording layer overlying a reflectively surfaced support, the improvement wherein said support surface is crenelated, having a plurality of continuous, uniform-depth grooves defining radially-spaced spiral or concentric track regions and with interleaved land regions of uniform height, and said recording stratum has a nominally planar outer surface whereby the thickness of recording stratum portions respectively overlying the track regions and the land regions are predeterminedly different.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 30 words
The invention defined in claim 6 further comprising a plurality of discrete information pits of substantially uniform depth which are formed in said recording layer generally within said track regions.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 59 words
The invention defined in claim 7 wherein said recording stratum is substantially transparent to light of a given read-wavelength and the nominal recording stratum thickness over land regions is predeterminedly less than the nominal recording stratum thickness over track regions by a predetermined magnitude providing a high phase difference between light of said read-wavelength reflected from such respective regions.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 95 words
The invention defined in claim 8 wherein said recording layer has optical constants such that the plot of relative phase-shift to recording stratum thickness variation with respect to light of said read-wavelength exhibits first and third thickness zones of relatively gradual slope on either side of a second thickness zone of relatively rapid slope and wherein the thickness of said recording stratum is such that the thicknesses of said over-land regions of said disc are proximate such a first thickness zone and the thickness of said over-track regions are proximate such a third thickness zone.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 35 words
The invention defined in claim 9 wherein said pit depths are such that the thickness of the recording stratum under said pits and aligned with a track region therebeneath, is proximate said first thickness zone.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 47 words
The invention defined in claim 10 wherein the nominal thickness of said recording layer and the depth of said pits are such that the thickness of the recording stratum under said pits and aligned with land regions of said disc also is proximate said first thickness zone.
