Claim 2

A photographic element comprising a support and at least one layer thereon containing a silver halide emulsion having associated therewith a compound represented by the formula ##STR25## wherein R is ##STR26## A is sulfur or selenium; X represents the nonmetallic atoms necessary to form a nucleus which completes a five or six membered heterocyclic moiety; R 1 is H or alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R 2 is H or a hydrolyzable group; and R 3 is H, alkyl or a hydrolyzable group.

Claim 3

A photographic element as defined in claim 1 wherein said silver halide emulsion has associated therewith an image-dye providing material.

Claim 4

A photographic element as defined in claim 2 wherein said image-dye providing material is a dye developer.

Claim 5

A photographic element as defined in claim 1 wherein X represents the nonmetallic atoms which complete a tetrazole ring.

A photographic element as defined in claim 4 wherein R is ##STR27##

Claim 7

A photographic element as defined in claim 4 wherein R is ##STR28## wherein R 4 is either a group having a pKa of from about 7 to about 14 which is ionizable to an anion whereby the silver salt of the moiety resulting from cleavage of R is more soluble in the pH range within which R 4 is ionized to an anion than it is below that pH range, or a precursor thereof.

Claim 8

A photographic element as defined in claim 6 wherein R 4 is selected from the group consisting of --OH; ##STR29## --SO 2 NH 2 ; --SO 2 NHCH 3 ; --SO 2 NHC 8 H 17 ; --NHSO 2 CH 3 ; ##STR30## where Z is H, alkyl having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, aralkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl.

Claim 9

A photographic element as defined in claim 7 wherein R 4 is --OH, --SO 2 NH 2 or ##STR31##

Claim 10

A photographic product for use in forming a multicolor diffusion transfer image comprising a photosensitive element comprising a support carrying a blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion having a yellow dye developer associated therewith, a green-sensitive silver halide emulsion having a magenta dye developer associated therewith and a red-sensitive silver halide emulsion having a cyan dye developer associated therewith, a second sheet-like element positioned in superposed or superposable relationship with said photosensitive element, an image-receiving layer positioned in one of said elements, a rupturable container releasably holding an aqueous alkaline processing composition adapted, when distributed between a pair of predetermined layers carried by said photosensitive element and said second element, to develop said silver halide emulsions and provide a multicolor diffusion transfer image on said image receiving layer, at least one of said photosensitive and second elements including a compound represented by the formula ##STR32## wherein R is ##STR33## A is sulfur or selenium; X represents the nonmetallic atoms necessary to form a nucleus which completes a five or six membered heterocyclic moiety; R 1 is H or alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R 2 is H or a hydrolyzable group; and R 3 is H, alkyl or a hydrolyzable group.

Claim 11

A photographic product for use in forming a multicolor diffusion transfer image comprising a photosensitive element comprising a support carrying a blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion having a yellow dye developer associated therewith, a green-sensitive silver halide emulsion having a magenta dye developer associated therewith and a red-sensitive silver halide emulsion having a cyan dye developer associated therewith, a second sheet-like element positioned in superposed or superposable relationship with said photosensitive element, an image-receiving layer positioned in one of said elements, a rupturable container releasably holding an aqueous alkaline processing composition adapted, when distributed between a pair of predetermined layers carried by said photosensitive element and said second element, to develop said silver halide emulsions and provide a multicolor diffusion transfer image on said image receiving layer, at least one of said photosensitive and second elements including a compound represented by the formula ##STR32## wherein R is ##STR33## A is sulfur or selenium; X represents the nonmetallic atoms necessary to form a nucleus which completes a five or six membered heterocyclic moiety; R 1 is H or alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R 2 is H or a hydrolyzable group; and R 3 is H, alkyl or a hydrolyzable group.

Claim 12

The product as defined in claim 9 wherein said second element includes said image receiving layer carried by a transparent support and said processing composition includes titanium dioxide.

Claim 13

The product as defined in claim 10 wherein said compound is located in said photosensitive element in a layer between said support and the silver halide emulsion closest to said support.

Claim 14

The product as defined in claim 10 wherein X represents the nonmetallic atoms which complete a tetrazole moiety.

The product as defined in claim 12 wherein R is ##STR34##

Claim 16

The product as defined in claim 12 wherein R is ##STR35## wherein R 4 is either a group having a pKa of from about 7 to about 14 which is ionizable to an anion whereby the silver salt of the moiety resulting from cleavage of R is more soluble in the pH range within which R 4 is ionized to an anion than it is below that pH range, or a precursor thereof.

Claim 17

The product as defined in claim 14 wherein R 4 is selected from the group consisting of --OH; ##STR36## --SO 2 NH 2 ; --SO 2 NHCH 3 ; --SO 2 NHC 8 H 17 ; --NHSO 2 CH 3 ; ##STR37## where Z is H, alkyl having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, aralkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl.

Claim 18

The product as defined in claim 15 where R 4 is --OH, --SO 2 NH 2 or ##STR38##

Claim 19

A diffusion transfer film unit comprising: (a) a photosensitive element comprising a support, a silver halide emulsion in a layer carried by said support and an image dye-providing material in a layer carried by said support on the same side thereof as said silver halide emulsion; (b) a second sheet-like element adapted to be superposed on said photosensitive element during or after photoexposure; (c) an image receiving layer positioned in one of said photosensitive or second sheet-like elements; (d) a rupturable container releasably holding an aqueous alkaline processing composition and so positioned as to be adapted to distribute said processing composition between predetermined layers of said elements; and (e) present in at least one of said photosensitive and second sheet-like elements a compound represented by the formula ##STR39## wherein R is ##STR40## A is sulfur or selenium; X represents the nonmetallic atoms necessary to form a nucleus which completes a five or six membered heterocyclic moiety; R 1 is H or alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R 2 is H or a hydrolyzable group; and R 3 is H, alkyl or a hydrolyzable group.

Claim 20

A diffusion transfer film unit comprising: (a) a photosensitive element comprising a support, a silver halide emulsion in a layer carried by said support and an image dye-providing material in a layer carried by said support on the same side thereof as said silver halide emulsion; (b) a second sheet-like element adapted to be superposed on said photosensitive element during or after photoexposure; (c) an image receiving layer positioned in one of said photosensitive or second sheet-like elements; (d) a rupturable container releasably holding an aqueous alkaline processing composition and so positioned as to be adapted to distribute said processing composition between predetermined layers of said elements; and (e) present in at least one of said photosensitive and second sheet-like elements a compound represented by the formula ##STR39## wherein R is ##STR40## A is sulfur or selenium; X represents the nonmetallic atoms necessary to form a nucleus which completes a five or six membered heterocyclic moiety; R 1 is H or alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R 2 is H or a hydrolyzable group; and R 3 is H, alkyl or a hydrolyzable group.

Claim 21

A film unit as defined in claim 17 wherein said compound is present in at least said second sheet-like element.

Claim 22

A diffusion transfer photographic process comprising exposing a film unit comprising a photosensitive element and a second element, said photosensitive element comprising a support carrying at least one silver halide emulsion having image dye-providing material associated therewith, applying an aqueous alkaline processing composition to said exposed photosensitive element to effect development and to form an imagewise distribution of image dye-providing material as a function of development and transferring at least a portion of said imagewise distribution of image dye-providing material to an image receiviang layer in superposed or superposable relationship therewith to thereby provide a diffusion transfer image, at least one of said photosensitive and second elements including a compound represented by the formula ##STR41## wherein R is ##STR42## A is sulfur or selenium; X represents the nonmetallic atoms necessary to form a nucleus which completes a five or six membered heterocyclic moiety; R 1 is H or alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R 2 is H or a hydrolyzable group; and R 3 is H, alkyl or a hydrolyzable group.

Claim 23

A diffusion transfer photographic process comprising exposing a film unit comprising a photosensitive element and a second element, said photosensitive element comprising a support carrying at least one silver halide emulsion having image dye-providing material associated therewith, applying an aqueous alkaline processing composition to said exposed photosensitive element to effect development and to form an imagewise distribution of image dye-providing material as a function of development and transferring at least a portion of said imagewise distribution of image dye-providing material to an image receiviang layer in superposed or superposable relationship therewith to thereby provide a diffusion transfer image, at least one of said photosensitive and second elements including a compound represented by the formula ##STR41## wherein R is ##STR42## A is sulfur or selenium; X represents the nonmetallic atoms necessary to form a nucleus which completes a five or six membered heterocyclic moiety; R 1 is H or alkyl having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms; R 2 is H or a hydrolyzable group; and R 3 is H, alkyl or a hydrolyzable group.

Claim 24

The process as defined in claim 19 wherein the photosensitive element comprises a support carrying a blue-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer having a yellow image dye-providing material associated therwith, a green-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer having a magenta image dye-providing material associated therewith and a red-sensitive silver halide emulsion layer having a cyan image dye-providiang material associated therewith.

Claim 25

The process as defined in claim 20 wherein said image dye-providing materials are dye developers and said emulsions are negative working emulsions.

The process as defined in claim 20 wherein X represents the nonmetallic atoms which complete a tetrazole moiety.

The process as defined in claim 22 wherein R is ##STR43##

The process as defined in claim 22 wherein R is ##STR44## wherein R 4 is either a group having a pKa of from about 7 to about 14 which is ionizable to an anion whereby the silver salt of the moiety resulting from cleavage of R is more soluble in the pH range within which R 4 is ionized to an anion than it is below that pH range, or a precursor thereof.

Claim 29

The process as defined in claim 24 wherein R 4 is selected from the group consisting of --OH; ##STR45## --SO 2 NH 2 ; --SO 2 NHCH 3 ; --SO 2 NHC 8 H 17 ; --NHSO 2 CH 3 ; ##STR46## where Z is H, alkyl having from 1 to 10 carbon atoms, aralkyl, phenyl or substituted phenyl.

The process as defined in claim 25 wherein R 4 is --OH, --SO 2 NH 2 or ##STR47##
