Abstract

Abstract An apparatus and method for joining panel members into walls or dividers is provided which allow thermal expansion of the panel members to be absorbed by the joints. The panel construction includes turned down edges having grooves on the inside faces of the edges. Each edge is sized to fit side-by-side in a channel with the edge of an adjoining panel and with their grooves over ridges on the inner walls of the sides of the channel. An insert member having protrusions on its sides is wedged between the side-by-side edges for maintaining the grooves over the ridges while allowing pivotal movement of the edges around the ridges.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 13
Claim 1
Independent Claim 120 words
An apparatus for joining panel members together comprising a channel having a substantially semi-cylindrical interlocking means extending from the inner walls of the sides into the channel for pivotally engaging a substantially semi-cylindrical interlocking means on the inner face of the turned down edges of panel members designed to be located side by side in said channel, insert means operable for insertion into said channel between the side-by-side edges of panels in said channel, and means protruding from the sides of said insert means for wedging the edges of panel members into said interlocking means and allowing pivotal movement of edges of panel members positioned in said channel about said interlocking means thereby permitting thermal expansion of said panel members.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 18 words
An apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising fastening means for fastening said insert means into said channel.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 58 words
An apparatus according to claim 2 wherein said insert means is a second channel, said protruding means is a ridge along each side of said second channel, and said fastening means includes a plurality of screws through the bed of said second channel into the bed of said first mentioned channel for preventing said second channel from collapsing.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 31 words
An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said insert means has a generally oval cross-section, and said protruding means is formed by one of the axis of the generally oval cross-section.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 34 words
An apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said insert means has a cross-section in the form of an arrow point, and said protruding means is formed by the flukes of said arrow point cross-section.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 31 words
An apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising flexible sealing means in said channel over said insert means and between the edges of inserted panel members for forming a watertight seal.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 23 words
An apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising attaching means for loosely attaching said channel to one of said panel turned down edges.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 33 words
An apparatus according to claim 7 wherein said attaching means is a plurality of screws through one side of said channel into the inner side of one of said panel turned down edges.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 169 words
A panel construction comprising panel members having turned down edges with longitudinal grooves running on the inside face and along the length of said edges, a channel for running the length of said panel edges having longitudinal ridges along the inner walls of its sides for fitting into said longitudinal grooves of said turned down edges when the edges are inserted side-by-side into said channel, said grooves and ridges being sized to cooperate with one another to allow pivotal movement of the edges around the ridges, and an insert member sized to be fitted into said channel between the turned down edges of said panels when said turned down edges are inserted into said channel, said insert member having protruding means longitudinally along its sides for wedging the side-by-side turned down edges away from each other such that the grooves in the face of said turned down edges are positioned over the longitudinal ridges on the walls of said channel allowing pivotal movement of said edges around said ridges.
Claim 11
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 28 words
A panel construction according to claim 9 wherein the angle of the face on one panel member and one of its turned down edges is less than 90°.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 28 words
A panel construction according to claim 9 wherein the inner corner formed by the connection of the panel member to the turned down edges has a reduced cross-section.
