Abstract

Abstract A magnetic recording and reproducing head arrangement utilizing the azimuth recording method which has an even number 2n of magnetic heads mounted in the head assembly. The carriage holds the head assembly at rest during recording or reproduction and moves the head assembly at right angles to the direction of transportation of the magnetic recording medium to change the tracks to be recorded or to be reproduced. The centers of the head gaps of the magnetic heads fall in a straight line which is at right angles to the direction of transportation of the magnetic medium and the separations therebetween are determined by the conditions that almost all the tracks are tracked by the magnetic heads, practically without leaving any unrecorded tracks within the recording region of the magnetic recording medium, and that magnetic interference between the magnetic heads is negligible. One half of the number of magnetic heads have a gap azimuth different to that of the other half of the number of magnetic heads so that the magnetizations on even ordinal and odd ordinal tracks have different directions from each other.
