Stabilized polycarbonate compositions

Claim 2

In a polycarbonate comprising a polycarbonate resin having sufficient halogen theren to provide flame retardant characteristics to said polycarbonate, the improvement comprising having intimately mixed with said polycarbonate a stabilizing amount of a phenolic compound selected from the group consisting of: (a) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR17## (b) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR18## and (c) a bisphenol substituted triazine of the formula: ##STR19## wherein n is 1 or 2, R is selected from the group consisting of alkylene and alkylidene having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R' is a bulky hydrocarbon alkyl group having 4 to 22 carbon atoms and having sufficient bulk to prevent inactivating reactions of the stabilizing hydroxyl group and R" is an alkyl radical having 1-22 carbon atoms.

Claim 3

The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein said phenolic compound stabilizer is present from 0.05 to 1 percent by weight based on the weight of said polycarbonate.

Claim 4

The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein said stabilizer is tris[2-(2-hydroxy-3-t-butyl-5-methyl benzyl)-4-methyl-6-butylphenyl] phosphate.

Claim 5

The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein said stabilizer is 2,4,6-tris[2-(2-hydroxy-3-tert-butyl-5-methyl-benzyl)-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenyl] cyanurate.

Claim 6

The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein said R' group contains a tertiary carbon atom attached to the aromatic ring.

Claim 7

The polycarbonate of claim 5 wherein R' is tertiary butyl.

Claim 8

The polycarbonate of claim 1 wherein said stabilizer has a molecular weight between 450 and 1600.

Claim 9

In a polycarbonate comprising a polycarbonate resin having sufficient halogen therein to provide flame retardant characteristics to said polycarbonate and having intimately mixed therein an effective amount of barium carbonate, strontium carbonate or calcium carbonate, the improvement comprising having intimately mixed with said polycarbonate a stabilizing amount of a phenolic compound selected from the group consisting of: (a) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR20## (b) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR21## and (c) a bisphenol substituted triazine of the formula: ##STR22## wherein n is 1 or 2, R is selected from the group consisting of alkylene and alkylidene having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R' is a bulky hydrocarbon alkyl group having 4 to 22 carbon atoms and having sufficient bulk to prevent inactivating reactions of the stabilizing hydroxyl group and R" is an alkyl radical having 1-22 carbon atoms.

Claim 10

In a polycarbonate comprising a polycarbonate resin having sufficient halogen therein to provide flame retardant characteristics to said polycarbonate and having intimately mixed therein an effective amount of barium carbonate, strontium carbonate or calcium carbonate, the improvement comprising having intimately mixed with said polycarbonate a stabilizing amount of a phenolic compound selected from the group consisting of: (a) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR20## (b) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR21## and (c) a bisphenol substituted triazine of the formula: ##STR22## wherein n is 1 or 2, R is selected from the group consisting of alkylene and alkylidene having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R' is a bulky hydrocarbon alkyl group having 4 to 22 carbon atoms and having sufficient bulk to prevent inactivating reactions of the stabilizing hydroxyl group and R" is an alkyl radical having 1-22 carbon atoms.

Claim 11

The polycarbonate of claim 8 wherein said phenolic compound stabilizer is present from 0.05 to 1 percent by weight based on the weight of said polycarbonate.

Claim 12

The polycarbonate of claim 8 wherein said stabilizer is tris[2-(2-hydroxy-3-t-butyl-5-methyl benzyl)-4-methyl-6-t-butylphenyl] phosphate.

Claim 13

The polycarbonate of claim 8 wherein said stabilizer is 2,4,6-tris[2-(2-hydroxy-3-tert-butyl-5-methylbenzyl)-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenyl] cyanurate.

Claim 14

The polycarbonate of claim 8 wherein said R' group contains a tertiary carbon atom attached to the aromatic ring.

Claim 15

The polycarbonate of claim 12 wherein R' is tertiary butyl.

Claim 16

The polycarbonate of claim 8 wherein said stabilizer has a molecular weight between 450 and 1600.

Claim 17

A polycarbonate comprising: (I) a polycarbonate resin having reacted therein a di-(monohydroxyhaloaryl)-alkane in a sufficient quantity to provide flame retardant characteristics to said polycarbonate; and (II) a stabilizing amount of a phenolic compound selected from the group consisting of: (a) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR23## (b) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR24## and (c) a bisphenol substituted triazine of the formula: ##STR25## wherein n is 1 or 2, R is selected from the group consisting of an alkylene and alkylidene having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R' is a bulky hydrocarbon alkyl group having 4 to 22 carbon atoms and having sufficient bulk to prevent inactivating reactions of the stabilizing hydroxyl group and R" is an alkyl radical having 1-22 carbon atoms.

Claim 18

A polycarbonate comprising: (I) a polycarbonate resin having reacted therein a di-(monohydroxyhaloaryl)-alkane in a sufficient quantity to provide flame retardant characteristics to said polycarbonate; and (II) a stabilizing amount of a phenolic compound selected from the group consisting of: (a) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR23## (b) a phosphate ester of the formula: ##STR24## and (c) a bisphenol substituted triazine of the formula: ##STR25## wherein n is 1 or 2, R is selected from the group consisting of an alkylene and alkylidene having 1 to 8 carbon atoms, R' is a bulky hydrocarbon alkyl group having 4 to 22 carbon atoms and having sufficient bulk to prevent inactivating reactions of the stabilizing hydroxyl group and R" is an alkyl radical having 1-22 carbon atoms.

Claim 19

The polycarbonate of claim 15 wherein said polycarbonate resin contains 3 to 10 percent by weight halogen.

Claim 20

The polycarbonate of claim 15 wherein said halogen is bromine.

Claim 21

The polycarbonate of claim 17 wherein said di-(monohydroxyhaloaryl)alkane is tetrabromobisphenol A.

Claim 22

The polycarbonate of claim 15 which further contains an effective amount of barium carbonate, strontium carbonate, or calcium carbonate.

Claim 23

The polycarbonate of claim 15 wherein said phenolic compound stabilizer has a molecular weight between 450 and 1600.

Claim 24

The polycarbonate of claim 15 wherein said phenolic compound stabilizer is present from 0.05 to 1 percent by weight based on the weight of said polycarbonate.

Claim 25

The polycarbonate of claim 15 wherein said stabilizer is tris[2-(2-hydroxy-3-t-butyl-5-methyl benzyl)-4-methyl-6-t-butylphenyl]phosphate.

Claim 26

The polycarbonate of claim 15 wherein said stabilizer is 2,4,6-tris[2-(2-hydroxy-3-tert-5-methyl-benzyl)-4-methyl-6-tert-butylphenyl] cyanurate.
