Abstract
Abstract A crystal for a scintillator is a single crystal of Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 containing up to 0.5% by weight of Bi 4 Si 3 O 12 and/or up to 50 ppm of Gd. The light output of this crystal as a scintillator can be increased by about 20% as compared with the light output of the conventional crystal of additive-free Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 .

A crystal for a scintillator which comprises a single crystal of Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 containing at least one component selected from the group consisting of Bi 4 Si 3 O 12 in an amount of not greater than 0.5% by weight and Gd in an amount of not greater than 50 ppm said amount being sufficient to effect, upon excitation by gamma ray radiation, a greater light output than that effected by a single crystal of Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 free of said component grown under the same conditions as the single crystal of Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 containing said component.
