Abstract

Abstract The present invention provides a machine and method wherein envelopes are removed from a supply hopper, one by one; transmitted to a cutting station wherein one edge of the envelope optionally may be severed; the envelope then being transmitted to a processing station at which the envelope is opened and held open by suction cups, for removal or insertion of contents by an operator. The envelope is thereafter transmitted to a detector station and then to a recovery station and then to a point of discharge. The dwell time of the envelope at the processing station may be adjusted as desired by the operator.

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 178 words
A method for opening a sealed envelope having opposing planar sides and exposing the contents thereof for manual removal comprising the steps of: stacking sealed envelopes to be opened, removing an envelope from the stack and transmitting the removed envelope from the stack with its planar sides in a substantialy horizontal plane to a cutting means, severing one edge of said envelope, transmitting the envelope from the cutting means with said sides in said substantially horizontal plane to an opening means, thereafter applying suction forces to aid opposite sides of said envelope while said sides are in said substantially horizontal plane, thereafter maintaining said suction forces on said opposite sides of said envelope and contemporaneously translating said suction forces and moving said suction forces upwardly and apart to move the opposite sides of said envelope apart and to upwardly incline said sides from said substantially horizontal plane to thereby incline said envelope at an angle to said substantially horizontal plane with the severed edge facing upwardly, and thereafter holding said envelope open for manual removal of envelope contents.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Independent Claim 228 words
A method for opening a plurality of sealed envelopes having opposing planar sides and exposing the contents thereof for manual removal comprising the steps of: stacking sealed envelopes to be opened, removing one of said sealed envelopes from the stack and transmitting the removed envelope from the stack with its planar sides in a substantially horizontal plane to a cutting means, severing one edge of said sealed envelope while maintaining said envelope sides in said substantially horizontal plane, transmitting said envelope from the cutting means with said sides in said substantially horizontal plane to an opening means, continuing to maintain said envelope sides in said substantially horizontal plane and applying suction forces to said opposite sides of said envelope while so held, thereafter maintaining said suction force on said opposite sides of said envelope and contemporaneously translating said suction forces and moving said suction forces upwardly and apart to move the opposite sides of said envelope apart and to upwardly incline said sides from said substantially horizontal plane to thereby incline said envelope at an angle to said substantially horizontal plane with the severed edge facing upwardly, thereafter stopping movement of said suction forces and holding said envelope for a predetermined period of time for manual removal of envelope contents and repeating said foregoing steps from the step of removing one of said sealed envelopes from the stack.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Independent Claim 207 words
A method for opening a plurality of sealed envelopes having opposing planar sides and exposing the contents thereof for removal comprising the steps of: placing a plurality of sealed envelopes in a stack, holding the leading envelope of said envelopes in said stack and urging the remainder of said envelopes behind said leading envelope against said leading envelope, removing said leading envelope from said stack and placing said leading envelope with its planar sides in a substantially horizontal plane, severing one ege of said leading envelope while said sides of said leading envelope are in said substantially horizontal plane, thereafter holding said sides of said leading envelope in said substantially horizontal plane and applying suction forces to said opposite sides of said leading envelope while so held, thereafter maintaining said suction forces on said opposite sides of said leading envelope and moving said suction forces upwardly and contemporaneously separating said suction forces to move the opposite sides of said leading envelope apart and to upwardly incline said sides from said substantially horizontal plane and to thereby incline said leading envelope at an angle to said substantially horizontal plane with the severed edge facing upwardly, and repeating said foregoing steps from the step of removing said leading envelope.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method as defined in claim 3, wherein: after the penultimate step, the movement of said suction forces is stopped for predetermined period of time.
