Abstract
Abstract A polyaryletherketone polymer which is a hydrophilic sulphonated polymer derived by controllably sulphonating a polymer having the repeat unit of formula ##STR1## alone or in conjunction with the repeat unit of formula ##STR2## the latter units, if present, remaining substantially non-sulphonated after sulphonation. The sulphonation may be effected using 98% w/w concentrated sulphuric acid.
