A detergent composition wherein the active surfactant ingredients consist essentially of from about 1 to 30% by weight of the total composition of a modified rosin ester of the formula ##STR17## wherein R is hydrogen, alkyl containing from about 8 to 22 carbon atoms, hydroxyalkyl containing from about 8 to 22 carbon atoms, sorbitan monoesters of fatty acids containing from 8 to 22 carbon atoms or alkyl phenoxy containing from about 8 to 22 carbon atoms; X is hydrogen or an alkali metal salt; A is CH 2 --CH 2 --O or ##STR18## and n is an integer from 4; and from about 0.5 to 30.0% by weight of the total composition of at least one additional surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic, nonionic, cationic and amphoteric surfactants with the proviso that the total amount of active surfactant ingredients should not be greater than about 40% by weight of the total composition and the proviso that the total amount of anionic and amphoteric surfactants should not be greater than about 20% by weight of the total composition.
