Abstract

Abstract A process for preparing a stabilized rosin ester having a higher softening point which comprises subjecting a rosin to disproportionation and purification, and esterifying the resulting purified disproportionated rosin with a tri- or more valent polyhydric alcohol to give a rosin ester having a softening point (according to ring and ball method) of 65° to 140° C. The resulting rosin ester has superior heat resistance and aging resistance as well as a high softening point and is suitably employed as a tackifier for pressure-sensitive adhesive compositions and hot-melt compositions.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 91 words
A process for preparing a stabilized rosin ester having a high softening point, which comprises: (a) subjecting a rosin to disproportionation; (b) purifying said disproportionated rosin in order to remove materials of high molecular weight and unsaponifiable materials to obtain a disproportionated rosin having an acid value of not less than 170; and (c) esterifying the resulting disproportionated purified rosin with a polyhydric alcohol selected from the group consisting of tri- or multi-valent polyhydric alcohols in order to obtain a rosin ester having a softening point of 65° to 140° C.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 91 words
A process for preparing a stabilized rosin ester having a high softening point, which comprises: (a) subjecting a rosin to disproportionation; (b) purifying said disproportionated rosin in order to remove materials of high molecular weight and unsaponifiable materials to obtain a disproportionated rosin having an acid value of not less than 170; and (c) esterifying the resulting disproportionated purified rosin with a polyhydric alcohol selected from the group consisting of tri- or multi-valent polyhydric alcohols in order to obtain a rosin ester having a softening point of 65° to 140° C.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 49 words
A process for preparing a stabilized rosin ester having a high softening point, as claimed in claim 1, wherein said purification step is carried out by distillation of said disproportionated rosin under a pressure of not more than 30 mm Hg, and a temperature of 200° to 300° C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 53 words
A process for preparing a stabilized rosin ester having a high softening point, as claimed in claim 1, wherein: said purification step is carried out by distillation of said disproportionated rosin at a pressure within the range of about 2 to 20 mm Hg, and a temperature of about 230° to 290° C.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 60 words
A process for preparing a stabilized rosin ester having a higher softening point, as claimed in claim 1, wherein: said purification step is carried out by crystallization wherein a solution of said disproportionated rosin is prepared by dissolving said disproportionated rosin in a good solvent with respect to said rosin, and then adding a poor solvent respect to said rosin.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 61 words
A process for preparing a stabilized rosin ester having a higher softening point, as claimed in claim 4, wherein: said good solvent is selected from the group consisting of benzene, toulene, xylene, chloroform, lower alcohols, ketones, lower alkyl acetates, and mixtures thereof, and wherein said poor solvent is selected from the group consisting of n-hexane, n-heptane, cyclohexane, isooctane and mixtures thereof.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process as claimed in any of claims 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5, in which the obtained rosin ester has a softening point of 90° to 140° C.
Claim 8
