Abstract
Abstract Methods of and apparatus for cleaning coal in which halogenated hydrocarbons are used as parting liquids. Various novel techniques, components, and combinations thereof are employed to maximize efficiency; to minimize costs and adverse environmental impacts; to make it possible to recover coal of a character which has heretofore been economically unrecoverable; to produce a superior product; and to reach other worthwhile goals.

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
74 words
A method of incorporating additives into particulate solids which comprises the steps of dispersing in a carrier which comprises a liquid selected from the group consisting of 1,2-difluoroethane, 1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, dichlorofluoroethane, 1-chloro-2-fluoroethane, 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane, 1,1-dichloro-1,2,2,2-tetrafluoroethane, and trichlorofluoromethane an additive which is soluble or otherwise dispersable in said carrier; contacting the solids with the carrier liquid and additive dispersion; and stripping essentially all of the carrier from the solids to thereby leave only the additive thereon.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
17 words
A method of incorporating additives into solids according to claim 1 in which the carrier is trichlorofluoromethane.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
19 words
A method of incorporating additives into solids according to claim 1 in which the additive is a dustproofing agent.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
20 words
A method of incorporating additives into solids according to claim 3 in which the dustproofing agent is a petroleum fraction.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
25 words
A method of incorporating additives into solids according to claim 1 in which the solids are coal particles and the additive is a waterproofing agent.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
20 words
A method of incorporating additives into solids according to claim 5 in which the waterproofing agent is a fuel oil.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
119 words
A method of incorporating additives into particulate solids which comprises the steps of dispersing in a carrier which comprises a liquid selected from the group consisting of 1,2-difluoroethane, 1-chloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane, dichlorofluoroethane, 1-chloro-2-fluoroethane, 1,1,2-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane, 1,1-dichloro-1,2,2,2-tetrafluoroethane, and trichlorofluoromethane an additive which is soluble or otherwise dispersable in said carrier; contacting the solids with the carrier liquid and additive dispersion; and stripping essentially all of the carrier from the solids to thereby leave only the additive thereon, said solids being coal particles and the additive comprising calcium or magnesium oxide, or both, said additive being added to the coal in an amount effective to reduce the content of sulfur in the gaseous combustion products generated by the subsequent burning of the coal.
Claim 9
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
57 words
A method of incorporating additives into solids according to claim 1 in which the solids are coal particles, particles separated therefrom by beneficiation, or particles of ash generated by the combustion of coal, and the additive is a surface active agent, a waterproofing or dustproofing agent, a binder, a friction reducing material, or a chemical reaction inhibitor.
