Abstract
Abstract A waste stream of nonvolatiles is recovered (NVR) as a by-product from the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol in the process for making adipic acid. The NVR is partially dehydrated, and then reacted with an esterifying polyol to form a polyester polyol product which is useful in producing polyurethane foams. A particularly useful end-product is a rigid polyurethane foam having good cell structure and a density of at least 2.0 lb./cu. ft.

Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim
64 words
A process for making polyurethane comprising reacting an organic polyisocyanate with a polyester polyol prepared by: a. oxidizing cyclohexane to form cyclohexanone, cyclohexanol and a non-volatile residue; b. separating out the non-volatile residue; c. reducing the water content of the residue to about less than 15% by weight; d. reacting the recovered residue from (c) with an esterifying polyol to form a polyester polyol.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
37 words
The process of claim 1, wherein step c. further comprises separating out a fraction having an acid number of at least 150, and wherein the polyester polyol has a hydroxyl number of from 250 to about 500.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
18 words
The process of claim 1, wherein step c. further comprising adding a sodium salt to the non-volatile residue.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
21 words
The process of claim 3, wherein the sodium salt is about 10% by weight of water present in the non-volatile residue.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
21 words
The process of claim 4, further comprising separating an acid-rich fraction of the salted out non-volatile residue from an acid-poor fraction.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
23 words
The process of claim 5, wherein the acid-rich fraction contains at least 75% by weight of the acids present in the non-volatile residue.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
24 words
The process of claim 1, wherein the non-volatile residue comprises substantially ε-hydroxy caproic acid, C 2 to C 6 monobasic and dibasic carboxylic acids.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
9 words
The product produced from the process of claim 1.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
23 words
The product produced from the process of claim 2 wherein the product is a foam having a density of at least 2.0 lb./cu.ft.
