Abstract

Abstract A non-aqueous primary battery comprised of an electrolytic solution of a solvent and a solute, a separator, an anode, and a bismuth (III) sulfide cathode is provided. The electrochemical system of this invention is particularly useful in small primary batteries commonly referred to as "button cells" due to its high volumetric energy density and retention of cell dimensions.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 57 words
A non-aqueous primary battery having (a) a light metal anode selected from the group consisting of lithium, magnesium, aluminum, beryllium, calcium, sodium, and potassium; (b) an electrolytic solution comprised of an organic solvent and a light inorganic salt dissolved therein; (c) a separator; and (d) a cathode consisting of bismuth (III) sulfide without binder or conductors added.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 57 words
A non-aqueous primary battery having (a) a light metal anode selected from the group consisting of lithium, magnesium, aluminum, beryllium, calcium, sodium, and potassium; (b) an electrolytic solution comprised of an organic solvent and a light inorganic salt dissolved therein; (c) a separator; and (d) a cathode consisting of bismuth (III) sulfide without binder or conductors added.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
The battery of claim 1 in which the light metal anode is lithium.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 17 words
The battery of claim 1 wherein the inorganic salt contains the same light metal as the anode.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The battery of claim 1 in which concentration of the salt in the electrolytic solution ranges from about 1 molar to about 3 molar.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 18 words
The battery of claim 3 wherein the salt is a perchlorate, hexafluorophosphate, tetrafluoroborate, tetrachloroaluminate, hexafluoroarsenate, halide or trifluoromethylsulfonate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 15 words
The battery of claim 1 wherein the organic solvent is propylene carbonate, 1,2-dimethoxyethane, or gamma-butyrolactone.
