Abstract

Abstract Nongelled, amine functional polymers dispersible in water with the aid of a solubilizing acid are provided by copolymerizing (A) an ethylenically unsaturated hydroxy functional amine adduct free of epoxy groups and containing from about 1.4 to about 2.0 ethylenically unsaturated amine groups per molecule, formed from a polyepoxide having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency of from 1.4 to about 2.0 and at least a stoichiometric amount of a secondary amine with two unsaturated groups; and (B) copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, a portion of which is amine-functional. The water solutions are particularly useful to enable corrosion resistant coatings to be electrodeposited at the cathode.

Total Claims: 8
Claim 1
Independent Claim 167 words
A method of electrodepositing a physically tough, corrosion resistant coating on the cathode of a unidirectional electrical system from an aqueous bath having a pH of 5.0-7.5 comprising passing a unidirectional electrical current through an aqueous bath comprising a water dispersible polymer which is a copolymer of: (A) an ethylenically unsaturated hydroxy functional amine adduct free of epoxy groups and containing from about 1.4 to about 2.0 ethylenically unsaturated amine groups per molecule, formed from a polyepoxide having a 1,2-epoxy equivalency of from about 1.4 to about 2.0 and at least a stoichiometric amount of an ethylenically unsaturated secondary amine having two ethylenically unsaturated groups; and (B) copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated monomers, a portion of which is amine-functional, said copolymer being dispersed in water with the aid of a solubilizing acid, said bath including an aminoplast or phenol-formaldehyde curing agent, and said electrical current depositing a coating of said polymer and said curing agent on the cathode, removing the coated cathode from the bath, and baking the same.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
A method as recited in claim 1 in which said bath has a resin solids content of from 4-20% by weight.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
A method as recited in claim 2 in which said bath has a pH in the range of 6.0-7.0.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
A method as recited in claim 3 in which said copolymer is solubilized with acetic acid.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 56 words
A method as recited in claim 1 in which said copolymer is formed by copolymerization in organic solvent solution and is present in admixture with from 10% to 150% of a water miscible organic solvent and said polyepoxide is a polyglycidyl ether of a bisphenol having a molecular weight of from about 700 to about 4000.
Claim 7
