Abstract

Abstract Acrylonitrile may be prepared by dehydrogenating propionitrile in the presence of dehydrogenation catalysts comprising a nonacidic complex containing a Group VIII metal and at least one metal selected from Groups IVA, VA, and VIIB of the Periodic Table. If so desired, the catalyst may also include a metal from Group IA or IIA of the Periodic Table and the combination may be supported on inorganic materials. The catalyst may be exemplified by platinum, tin and lithium composited on alumina.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 73 words
A process for the preparation of acrylonitrile which comprises contacting propionitrile at dehydrogenation conditions with a dehydrogenation catalyst comprising a nonacidic complex containing, on an elemental basis, from about 0.01 to about 2 wt. % of a Group VIII metal and from about 0.01 to about 5 wt. % of a metal from Groups IVA, VA and VIIB of the Periodic Table composited on a porous carrier material, and recovering the resultant acrylonitrile.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 73 words
A process for the preparation of acrylonitrile which comprises contacting propionitrile at dehydrogenation conditions with a dehydrogenation catalyst comprising a nonacidic complex containing, on an elemental basis, from about 0.01 to about 2 wt. % of a Group VIII metal and from about 0.01 to about 5 wt. % of a metal from Groups IVA, VA and VIIB of the Periodic Table composited on a porous carrier material, and recovering the resultant acrylonitrile.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 34 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 further characterized in that said catalyst contains, on an elemental basis, from about 0.01 to about 5 wt. % of an alkali or alkaline earth metal.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 41 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said dehydrogenation conditions include a temperature in the range of from about 400° to about 700° C. and a pressure in the range of from about 0.5 to about 10 atmospheres.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said porous carrier material is an alumina.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
The process as set forth in claim 4 in which said alumina is gamma-alumina.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said porous carrier material is silica-alumina.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said catalyst is platinum, tin, and lithium composited on alumina.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process as set forth in claim 2 in which said catalyst comprises platinum and lithium.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 16 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said catalyst comprises platinum and tin.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 21 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 further characterized in that said process is effected in the presence of hydrogen.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 21 words
The process as set forth in claim 1 in which said catalyst is subjected to a sulfiding step prior to use.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process as set forth in claim 11 in which said sulfiding step is effected at a temperature in the range of from about 400° to about 600° C.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 27 words
The process as set forth in claim 11 in which said sulfiding step is effected by treating said catalyst with a stream of gas containing hydrogen sulfide.
