Abstract

Abstract Unsupported metal oxide platey nacreous pigments are derived from metal oxide coated mica by a unique dissolution process and show higher luster and coverage than the pigment from which they are derived. If the metal oxide coated mica shows a reflection interference color, the unsupported product derived from it shows higher luster and greater reflection color intensity.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 18
Claim 1
Independent Claim 69 words
A method for the preparation of a nacreous pigment which comprises the step of subjecting a non-toxic metal oxide coated mica nacreous pigment to an extractive dissolution by contacting said pigment with an aqueous acidic solution comprising hydrofluoric acid together with a mineral acid at an elevated temperature until the desired amount of mica has been removed and the luster has thereby been increased, and recovering the resulting pigment.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 69 words
A method for the preparation of a nacreous pigment which comprises the step of subjecting a non-toxic metal oxide coated mica nacreous pigment to an extractive dissolution by contacting said pigment with an aqueous acidic solution comprising hydrofluoric acid together with a mineral acid at an elevated temperature until the desired amount of mica has been removed and the luster has thereby been increased, and recovering the resulting pigment.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 12 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said mineral acid is sulfuric acid.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 45 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the metal oxide coated mica nacreous pigment in the aqueous acid is in a concentration of about 1-20%, the hydrofluoric acid is at a concentration of about 1-20% and the mineral acid is at a concentration of about 2-30%.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 32 words
The method of claim 3 wherein the metal oxide coated mica nacreous pigment concentration is about 2-10%, the hydrofluoric acid concentration is about 4-10% and the mineral acid concentration is about 5-20%.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said contacting is effected at a temperature of about 30°-100° C.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 12 words
The method of claim 5 wherein said temperature is about 50°-80° C.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method of claim 1 wherein said metal oxide coated mica nacreous pigment is a titanium dioxide coated mica nacreous pigment.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 15 words
The method of claim 7 wherein said titanium dioxide is in the rutile crystalline form.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 22 words
A non-toxic metal oxide coated mica nacreous pigment in which at least about half of the mica has been removed by dissolution.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 22 words
A non-toxic metal oxide coated mica nacreous pigment in which at least about half of the mica has been removed by dissolution.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 59 words
An unsupported non-toxic metal oxide platey nacreous pigment comprising platelets of metal oxide of about 1-75 microns in length and about 5-600 nm in thickness, incorporating up to 20% mica and exhibiting at least the same luster and reflection color intensity of double the weight of the corresponding metal oxide coated mica nacreous pigment of the same reflection color.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 59 words
An unsupported non-toxic metal oxide platey nacreous pigment comprising platelets of metal oxide of about 1-75 microns in length and about 5-600 nm in thickness, incorporating up to 20% mica and exhibiting at least the same luster and reflection color intensity of double the weight of the corresponding metal oxide coated mica nacreous pigment of the same reflection color.
Claim 14
