Abstract

Abstract A system and method is disclosed for obtaining precisely registered, articulated castings of upper and lower dental impressions. The dental impressions are obtained through use of a dental tray having a non-porous, bite-deformable central septum. The impression material for the upper dental impression is contained in the upper portion of the tray. The impression material for the lower dental impression is contained in the lower portion of the tray and is supported by a bottom cover which is removed subsequent to placement of the tray in the mouth. As the patient bites, the impression material in the upper and lower portions of the dental tray is molded to the contour of the teeth and gums in their proper relationship with the teeth closed. After the material has set, the tray containing registered upper and lower impressions is removed from the mouth and placed into a mold. The mold consists of two end pieces which are adapted to hold the tray between and to form a seal with the tray so that casting material can be poured between each of the end pieces and the set impression material during the same operation. After the casting material is hardened and the castings are registered, the mold is removed, thus leaving precisely registered castings of the patient's teeth. When articulation of the upper and lower castings is desired, an articulator or a device which may be secured to an external articulator is positioned in each portion of the mold in the casting material prior to setting. After the casting material hardens, the mold is removed, and the articulator is rotated to release the impressions, thus leaving a precisely registered, articulated casting of the patient's teeth.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 111 words
A casting mold adapted to receive a dental tray for simultaneously casting registered upper and lower dental impressions contained in the dental tray, the dental tray having a substantially U-shaped wall around part of each impression, and at least one non-porous, bite-deformable septum, comprising: two end pieces; and, means for providing at least one seal between the dental tray and an inner contour of the mold so that two separate cavities are formed, each cavity being partially defined by one of the dental impressions contained within the dental tray and an adjacent mold end piece and being separated from the other cavity by said at least one non-porous septum and seal.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 111 words
A casting mold adapted to receive a dental tray for simultaneously casting registered upper and lower dental impressions contained in the dental tray, the dental tray having a substantially U-shaped wall around part of each impression, and at least one non-porous, bite-deformable septum, comprising: two end pieces; and, means for providing at least one seal between the dental tray and an inner contour of the mold so that two separate cavities are formed, each cavity being partially defined by one of the dental impressions contained within the dental tray and an adjacent mold end piece and being separated from the other cavity by said at least one non-porous septum and seal.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 44 words
A mold as defined in claim 1 wherein said means for providing said at least one seal between the dental tray and an inner contour of the mold comprises means for engaging said end piece against upper and lower rims of said U-shaped wall.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 42 words
A mold as defined in claim 1 further comprising a support adapted to hold the dental tray, said means for sealing being provided by engagement of the outer periphery of at least one of the U-shaped walls against said dental tray support.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 35 words
A mold as defined in claim 1 further comprising: means for supporting an articulating device so that portions of the articulating device are adapted to extend into each of the said cavities a predetermined depth.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 62 words
A mold as defined in claim 4, further comprising: an articulator comprising first and second rotatable support structures, said first support structure being adapted to extend in the mold cavity in which the upper teeth casting is to be formed and said second support structure being adapted to extend into the mold cavity in which the lower teeth casting will be formed.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 45 words
A mold as defined in claim 1 further comprising: mounting plates positioned in each mold cavity at a predetermined position so that an external articulator can register the upper and lower castings with each other when mounted on the external articulator by the mounting plates.
