Abstract

Abstract An apparatus in which the lateral alignment of a belt arranged to move in a pre-determined path is controlled. A support mounted resiliently constrains lateral movement of the belt causing the belt to apply a moment to a pivotably mounted steering post. As a result of this moment, the steering post pivots in a direction to restore the belt to the pre-determined path.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 14
Claim 1
Independent Claim 137 words
An apparatus for controlling the lateral alignment of a belt arranged to move in a pre-determined path, including: a steering post arranged to provide support for the belt and being mounted for pivotable movement about an axis substantially normal to the longitudinal axis thereof; means for supporting resiliently the belt, said supporting means opposing the movement of the belt laterally from the pre-determined path and causing the belt to apply a moment on said steering post pivoting said steering post in the direction to restore the belt to the pre-determined path; means for moving the belt in the pre-determined path; and means for supplying a pressurized fluid between at least a portion of said steering post and the belt to form a fluid film supporting the belt and reducing friction between the belt and said steering post.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 53 words
An apparatus as recited in claim 1, wherein said steering post defines an interior chamber in communication with said supplying means and having a plurality of apertures in the periphery thereof through which pressurized fluid flows to form a fluid film between said steering post and the portion of the belt passing thereover.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 60 words
An apparatus as recited in claim 1 or 2, wherein said supporting means includes a pivotably mounted post defining an interior chamber in communication with said supplying means and having a plurality of apertures in the periphery thereof through which the pressurized fluid flows to form the fluid film between said post and the portion of the belt passing thereover.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
An apparatus as recited in claim 3, wherein said supporting means includes at least one spring urging said post to maintain the belt passing thereover under tension.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 90 words
An apparatus as recited in claim 4, wherein said supporting means includes a pair of opposed, spaced end guides, one of said pair of end guides being secured to one marginal end of said post and the other of said pair of end guides being secured to the other marginal end of said post, said pair of end guides extending in a direction substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of said post and being spaced from one another a distance sufficient to define a passageway through which the belt moves.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 35 words
An apparatus as recited in claim 5, wherein said moving means includes: a drive roller in engagement with the belt; and means for rotating said drive roller to move the belt in the pre-determined path.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 148 words
An electrophotographic printing machine of the type having an endless photoconductive belt moving in a pre-determined path through a plurality of processing stations disposed thereabout, wherein the improvement includes: a steering post arranged to provide support for the belt and being mounted for pivotable movement about an axis substantially normal to the longitudinal axis thereof; means for supporting resiliently the belt, said supporting means opposing the movement of the belt laterally from the pre-determined path and causing the belt to apply a moment on said steering post pivoting said steering post in a direction to restore the belt to the pre-determined path; means for moving the belt in the pre-determined path; and means for supplying a pressurized fluid between at least a portion of said steering post and the belt to form a fluid film supporting the belt and reducing friction between the belt and said steering post.
Claim 9
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 55 words
A printing machine machine as recited in claim 7, wherein said steering post defines an interior chamber in communication with said supplying means and having a plurality of apertures in the periphery thereof through which pressurized fluid flows to form the fluid film between said steering post and the portion of the belt passing thereover.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 61 words
A printing machine as recited in claim 7 or 8, wherein said supporting means includes a pivotably mounted post defining an interior chamber in communication with said supplying means and having a plurality of apertures in the periphery thereof through which the pressurized fluid flows to form a fluid film between said post and the portion of the belt passing thereover.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 28 words
A printing machine as recited in claim 9, wherein said supporting means includes at least one spring urging said post to maintain the belt passing thereover under tension.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim 91 words
A printing machine as recited in claim 10, wherein said supporting means includes a pair of opposed, spaced end guides, one of said pair of end guides being secured to one marginal end of said post and the other of said pair of end guides being secured to the other marginal end of said post, said pair of end guides extending in a direction substantially normal to the longitudinal axis of said post and being spaced from one another a distance sufficient to define a passageway through which the belt moves.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim 36 words
A printing machine as recited in claim 11, wherein said moving means includes: a drive roller in engagement with the belt; and means for rotating said drive roller to move the belt in the pre-determined path.
