Abstract

Abstract A laser beam is applied to a rotating workpiece tangentially of the path of rotation thereof with a suitable tolerance while the light is being shifted relative to the workpiece, whereby the irradiated portion of the workpiece is melted and the molten material is removed by removing means for shaping. This method forms an annular groove in part of the outer periphery of the workpiece or a smooth surface or indentations of specified depth in the outer periphery over a wide area.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 67 words
A method of working the outer periphery of a workpiece using laser beam, comprising the steps of: rotating a workpiece; irradiating the workpiece at a point of irradiation with a laser beam oriented tangential to the workpiece to effect melting the workpiece in the area of irradiation, removing the melt, and shifting the point of irradiation in the direction of the axis of rotation of the workpiece.
Claim 2
Independent Claim 67 words
A method of working the outer periphery of a workpiece using laser beam, comprising the steps of: rotating a workpiece; irradiating the workpiece at a point of irradiation with a laser beam oriented tangential to the workpiece to effect melting the workpiece in the area of irradiation, removing the melt, and shifting the point of irradiation in the direction of the axis of rotation of the workpiece.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 26 words
A method as defined in claim 1 including the step of moving the point of irradiation inwardly toward the center of the rotation of the workpiece.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method as defined in claim 1 wherein the step of removing the melt is effected by the application of a jet of gas thereto.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
A method as defined in claim 1 wherein the step of removing the melt is effected by engaging the melt with a shaping tool.
