Abstract
Abstract Nitroaromatic derivatives of glycosides such as maltotetraose, maltopentaose and maltohexaose are described. These compounds are useful as standard substrates for the assay of α-amylase either manually or automatically on suitable instruments.

A compound having the formula: ##STR24## wherein the configuration of the substituent --OR on the anomeric carbon is α- or β-, n is an integer of 2, 3 or 4, and R is a substituted aromatic radical selected from the group consisting of: ##STR25## wherein X and Y are individually H, NO 2 halogen, alkyl of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, OR 1 or CO 2 R 1 , where R 1 is an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, with the proviso that at least one of X and Y is NO 2 .
