A polymerizable composition comprising a carbocyclic tetracarboxylic ester monomer useful for imparting flame retardance to resin polymers having the general formula: (RO.sub.2 C').sub.2 ═X═(C"O.sub.2 R').sub.2 wherein ═X═ is selected from a tetravalent double 6 membered ring system wherein the C' carbons are attached to a pair of vicinal carbons in said ring system and the C" carbons are attached to another pair of vicinal carbons in said ring system wherein 1 each of R and R' is selected from a halogenated organic radical containing at least 2 atoms of chlorine or bromine and the other of each R and R' is selected from --H, --CH 2 CH(OH)CH 2 O 2 CCR"═CH 2 , and --CH[CH 2 (OH)]CH 2 O 2 CCR"═CH 2 , wherein R" is --H or --CH 3 ; further comprising one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers and an ethylenically unsaturated polyester resin.
