Claim 1
Independent Claim
162 words
A directional relay for a polyphase electric power transmission system comprising: means for producing first and second voltages which are respectively of the form V A ∓ I A Z r ' and V A ∓ I A Z r " where V A is a voltage component of the system at the relaying point; I A is the corresponding current at the relaying point; and Z r ' and Z r " are impedances having values such that said first and second voltage simulate said voltage component at different points so that the amplitude difference of said first and second voltages under fault conditions corresponds in sense to the sense of the variation of said voltage component from point to point along the system between the relaying point and the fault point in a given direction along the system; and amplitude comparator means for producing an output indicative of the sense of the amplitude difference of said first and second voltages.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
109 words
A relay according to claim 1 wherein said first and second voltages are respectively of the form V A - I A Z r ' and V A - I A Z r " and the impedances Z r ' and Z r " have moduli which satisfy the condition | Z r ' | > | Z r " | and the condition | Z r ' + Z r " | ≦ 2 | Z L |, Z L being the component, corresponding to said voltage component, of the impedance of the system between the relaying point and the end of the system in said given direction.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
109 words
A relay according to claim 2 wherein said first and second voltages are respectively of the form V A - I A Z r ' and V A + I A Z r " and the impedances Z r ' and Z r " have moduli which satisfy the condition | Z r ' | > | Z r " | and the condition | Z r ' - Z r " | ≦ 2 | Z L |, Z L being the component, corresponding to said voltage component of the impedance of the system between the relaying point and the end of the system in said given direction.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
35 words
A relay according to claim 2 wherein the impedances Z r ' and Z r " have arguments substantially the same as that of the impedance presented to the current I A by the system.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
71 words
A relay according to claim 1 wherein said means for producing said first and second voltages comprises: a voltage transformer arrangement which produces an output voltage representative of V A ; a current transformer arrangement which produces output voltages respectively representative of I A Z r ' and I A Z r "; and means for combining the output voltages of said transformer arrangements to produce said first and second voltages.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
