Abstract
Abstract Drafts of preselected weight are sliced into a preselected number of slices by passing the material to be sliced through a curtain of radiation to measure the density of the material, and this measurement is used to calculate the length of each draft, which measurement is stored and subsequently read out to control the operation of a stepping hydroelectric motor which pushes the material through a cutting station at the proper speed.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
148 words
In a slicing machine which includes a slicing blade, a path along which material to be sliced may be moved toward said blade, radiation means positioned to direct gamma particles toward said material as it moves along said path whereby some of the gamma particles so directed are absorbed in said material and some pass through said material, the improvement comprising means for detecting individual particles which pass through said material and for converting energy of said particles which are so detected into an electrical signal in which the energy from each particle so detected is represented as an electrical pulse, means for digitally counting said pulses as said material moves along said path and means responsive to the count of said pulses for advancing said material along said path and toward said blade at a speed which is inversely proportional to the number of pulses so counted.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
49 words
A machine as set forth in claim 1 which includes means for selecting on the basis of a minimum energy level the pulses of said signal which are counted by said counting means to thereby eliminate from the count those pulses which do not meet said minimum energy level.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
58 words
A machine as set forth in claim 1 in which said pulse count is made at a point on said material in said path in advance of said blade and which includes means for storing said count and in which said last mentioned means is responsive to said count when said point on said material reaches said blade.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
38 words
A machine as set forth in claim 1 including means responsive to the count of pulses over a time period for stopping said advancing means when said count reaches a value corresponding to a predetermined weight of material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
37 words
A machine as set forth in claim 4 including means for driving said blade in sychronism with said stopping means to thereby produce a predetermined number of slices of said material before said advancing means is stopped.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
21 words
A machine as set forth in claim 1 in which said means for advancing said material includes an electrical stepping motor.
