Abstract Ampholytic quaternary ammonium compounds according to the formula: <IMAGE> where R, R1 and R2 each is an alkyl group containing a carbon chain of from 1 to 22 carbon atoms, R3 is H, CH3 or CH3 CH2, R4 is H or CH3, and X is COOH, CN, CHO, or COOCH3 and methods for preparing such compounds wherein a tertiary amine is reacted with an alpha , beta unsaturated compound to produce an intermediate reaction product and this intermediate reaction product is reacted with an alkylene oxide to produce the ampholytic quaternary ammonium compound.
