Claim 1
Independent Claim 102 words
As an article of manufacture, an electronic display device comprising: (a) at least one base member, (b) a thin, layer-like structure of controlled thickness supported on a surface of said base member, (c) said structure comprising poly(ethylene oxide) in matrix form and N,N'-bis(p-n-octyloxybenzylidene)-2-chloro-1,4-phenylenediamine nematic liquid-crystal material; (d) said nematic liquid-crystal material being dispersed in said poly(ethylene oxide) matrix in intimate contact therewith, and said poly(ethylene oxide) being chemically and physically inert relative to the contained liquid-crystal material, and (e) means for applying an electric field to selected areas of said structure to produce a dynamic scattering effect in said nematic liquid-crystal materail.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 102 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
The article of claim 1 wherein the poly(ethylene oxide) has a molecular weight of about 10,000 to about 200,000.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
The article of claim 1 wherein the weight ratio of liquid-crystal material to poly(ethylene oxide) matrix ranges between about 1:4 and 4:1.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
The article of claim 1 in the form of a thin film having an overall thickness in the range from about 0.25 mil to about 2.5 mils.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 92 words
As an article of manufacture, an electronic display device comprising a thin layer of N,N'-bis(p-n-octyloxybenzylidene)-2-chloro-1,4-phenylenediamine nematic liquid-crystal material and poly(ethylene oxide) in matrix form, said nematic liquid-crystal material being dispersed in said poly(ethylene oxide) matrix in intimate contact therewith and said poly(ethylene oxide) being chemically and physically inert relative to the contained liquid-crystal material, said layer being supported on the surface of at least one base member, and means for applying an electric field to selected areas of the thin layer to produce a dynamic scattering effect in said nematic liquid-crystal material.
