Abstract
Abstract A system for the continuous dielectrophoretic separation of mixtures of particulate and granular materials by passing the materials through a divergent electric field created in a fluid dielectric medium by applying a voltage to an electrode configuration including a rotatable cylindrical-shaped electrode having a non-uniform conductor surface and a stationary perforate electrode spaced therefrom to define a contact zone. The particles having dielectric constants lower than that of the fluid medium are collected through the perforate electrode while those particles having dielectric constants higher than that of the fluid medium are attracted to and separated by the rotatable electrode.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
95 words
A dielectrophoretic separator for the continuous separation of particulate and granular materials, which separator comprises, in combination: a vessel containing a liquid dielectric medium; an electrode configuration disposed within the vessel and including: a cylindrical-shaped rotatable electrode having a nonuniform conductor surface, and an arcuate-shaped perforated electrode spaced radially outward from the rotatable electrode to define a contact zone therewith; and means for applying a source of voltage to the electrode configuration to produce a divergent electric field in the contact zone, wherein the particulate and granular materials are immersed in the divergent electric field.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
36 words
The separator of claim 1 wherein the rotatable electrode includes: a cylindrical-shaped insulated support, and a wire grid defined by a plurality of conductive wires spaced apart on the outer peripheral surface of the insulated support.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
14 words
The separator of claim 1 wherein the perforate electrode includes a conductive metal screen.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
30 words
The separator of claim 1 wherein the arcuate configuration of the perforate electrode substantially corresponds to the circumferential curvature of the rotatable electrode to thereby define an arcuate-shaped contact zone.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
40 words
The separator of claim 4 wherein: the rotatable electrode is supported for rotation about a longitudinal horizontal axis, and the perforate electrode is disposed adjacent the lowermost quadrant of the rotatable electrode corresponding to the downward motion thereof during rotation.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
72 words
The separator of claim 5 wherein the vessel includes: a first collection area disposed beneath the perforate electrode for receiving separated particles passing therethrough having dielectric constants lower than that of the liquid dielectric medium, and a second collection area disposed below the lowermost quadrant of the rotatable electrode corresponding to the upward motion thereof during rotation for receiving separated particles having dielectric constants higher than that of the liquid dielectric medium.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
52 words
The separator of claim 6 wherein the first and second collection areas are defined by a vertical baffle extending upwardly from the bottom of the vessel and terminating at a distance from the lowermost point of the rotatable electrode substantially equal to the spacing between the perforate electrode and the rotatable electrode.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
38 words
The separator of claim 7 wherein: the perforate electrode has a longitudinal axis substantially equal in length to that of the rotatable electrode, and the lowermost longitudinal edge of the perforate electrode is supported by the vertical baffle.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
21 words
The separator of claim 1 further including means for supporting and feeding the materials to be separated into the electrode configuration.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
13 words
The separator of claim 1 further including means for rotating the rotatable electrode.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
22 words
The separator of claim 1 wherein the perforate electrode is spaced from the rotatable electrode at a distance of approximately 1/8 inch.
