Abstract

Abstract This invention provides an improved hydrogenation process for converting α,β-olefinically unsaturated carbonylic compounds into the corresponding allylic alcohol derivatives in the presence of a novel silver-cadmium alloy catalyst. Acrolein is hydrogenated to allyl alcohol with 100 percent conversion and 70 percent yield.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 104 words
An improved hydrogenation process for converting a α,β-olefinically unsaturated carbonylic compound into the corresponding allylic alcohol derivative which comprises reacting an α,β-olefinically unsaturated carbonylic compound with hydrogen in the vapor phase at a temperature between about 0° and 300° C and a pressure between about 15 and 15,000 psi in the presence of a catalyst comprising a silver-cadmium alloy on a carrier substrate, wherein the atomic ratio of silver to cadmium in the alloy is in the range of between about 0.1 and 3 to 1, and the alloy exhibits an X-ray diffraction pattern which is substantially free of detectable unalloyed metal crystallite lines.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 104 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the carbonylic compound is acrolein.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the carbonylic compound is methacrolein.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 13 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the carbonylic compound is crotonaldehyde.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the carbonylic compound is methylvinyl ketone.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 14 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the carbonylic compound is methylisopropenyl ketone.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 21 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the silver-cadmium alloy consists of more than about 50 percent γ-phase silver-cadmium crystallites.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 35 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the silver-cadmium alloy consists of more than 50 percent α-phase silver-cadmium crystallites, and the X-ray diffraction pattern of the α-phase silver-cadmium alloy does not exhibit line splitting.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 34 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the silver-cadmium alloy consists essentially of α-phase and γ-phase silver-cadmium crystallites, and the X-ray diffraction pattern of the α-phase silver-cadmium alloy does not exhibit line splitting.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 39 words
A process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the silver cadmium alloy consists essentially of α-phase, γ-phase, and ε-phase silver cadmium alloy crystallites, and the X-ray diffraction pattern of the α-phase silver cadmium alloy does not exhibit line splitting.
