Silane end-capped polyarylene polyethers

Claim 2

A silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of the formula: X--polyarylene polyether chain--X' wherein X and X' individually represent silane end groups, wherein each silane end group contains at least one hydrolyzable substituent group or at least one silanol hydroxyl group.

Claim 3

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 1 wherein the hydrolyzable substituent is alkoxy, dialkylamino, or oxycarbonylalkyl.

Claim 4

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 1 wherein said polyarylene polyether contains alkoxy, silanol hydroxy, or both, substituents on the silicon atoms of the silane groups.

Claim 5

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 1 which is a composition of the formula: (R') 3 Si-R-O--Ar-O-- n R-Si(R') 3 wherein each R' individually represents alkyl, alkoxy, dialkylamino, or oxycarbonylalkyl substituent groups and at least one R' on each silicon atom represents a hydrolyzable group; wherein each R individually represents a divalent hydrocarbyl group bonded to the silicon atom with a direct carbon-to-carbon bond, and bonded to the oxy group through an aliphatic carbon atom; wherein n is a positive number; and wherein Ar represents a divalent aromatic group that can be the same or different from one --Ar-O-- group to the next, and in which each Ar group is bonded to the connecting oxy groups through aromatic carbon atoms.

Claim 6

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 4 wherein each R individually represents alkylene, cycloalkylene, or aralkylene.

Claim 7

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 4 wherein at least some of the hydrolyzable substituents on the silicon atoms have been replaced with hydroxy groups.

Claim 8

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 5 wherein at least some of the hydrolyzable substituents on the silicon atoms have been replaced with hydroxy groups.

Claim 9

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 4 which is a composition of the formula: (R') 3 Si-R-O-E--O-E'-O-E-- n O-R-Si(R') 3 wherein n, R, and R' have the meanings stated in claim 4; wherein E represents the residue after removal of the hydroxyl groups of a dihydric phenol; and wherein E' represents the residue after removal of the two activated halo groups of an aromatic compound having two activated halo substituents.

Claim 10

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 8 wherein each R individually represents alkylene, cycloalkylene, or aralkylene.

Claim 11

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 8 wherein at least some of the hydrolyzable substituents on the silicon atoms have been replaced with hydroxy groups.

Claim 12

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 9 wherein at least some of the hydrolyzable substituents on the silicon atoms have been replaced with hydroxy groups.

Claim 13

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 8 wherein E represents the residue of hydroquinone, 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, 4,4'-thiodiphenol, p,p'-biphenol, or bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone, and wherein E' represents the residue of 4,4'-dihalodiphenyl sulfone, 4,4'-dihalobenzophenone, or 4,4'-bis(4-halophenylsulfonyl)biphenyl.

Claim 14

the silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 8 wherein E represents the residue of 2,2'-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, and wherein E' represents the residue of 4,4'-dihalodiphenyl sulfone.

Claim 15

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 8 wherein R represents alkylene, and wherein the hydrolyzable R' groups are alkoxy.

Claim 16

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 14 wherein at least some of the alkoxy groups have been replaced with hydroxy groups.

Claim 17

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 9 wherein E represents the residue of hydroquinone, 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, 4,4'-thiodiphenol, p,p'-biphenol or bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) sulfone, and wherein E' represents the residue of 4,4'-dihalodiphenyl sulfone, 4,4'-dihalobenzophenone, or 4,4'-bis(4-halophenylsulfonyl)biphenyl.

Claim 18

The silane end-capped polyarylene polyether of claim 9 wherein E represents the residue of 2,2-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane, and wherein E' represents the residue of 4,4'-dihalodiphenyl sulfone.
