Abstract
Abstract A process for the conversion of H 2 S to SO 2 is a feed gas containing H 2 S is effected by oxidation with air or oxygen at temperatures between 300° and 900° F. The oxidation is conducted in the presence of an extremely stable oxidation catalyst comprising an oxide and/or sulfide of vanadium supported on a non-alkaline porous refractory oxide. The preferred catalyst comprises between 5 and 15 wt.% V 2 O 5 on hydrogen mordenite or alumina. Hydrogen, carbon monoxide and light hydrocarbons present in the feed gas are not oxidized. The invention is especially contemplated for use in treating waste gases from geothermal steam power plants.

Independent Claim
150 words
A process for oxidizing H 2 S to SO 2 in a feed gas containing a minor proportion of H 2 S and a substantial proportion of H 2 , which process comprises: (1) contacting said feed gas, in admixture with oxygen supplied in excess of the amount required to convert all of said H 2 S to SO 2 , with an oxidation catalyst at a temperature between about 300° and 900° F so as to convert at least some of said H 2 S to SO 2 , said oxidation catalyst comprising a vanadium oxide and/or sulfide as the essential active component supported on a non-alkaline porous refractory oxide, said contacting converting essentially none of said H 2 S or SO 2 to SO 3 ; and (2) recovering a gaseous effluent of reduced H 2 S content, but still containing essentially all of said H 2 .
Claim 2
Dependent Claim
