Claims Analysis
Total Claims: 15
Claim 1
Independent Claim
63 words
A method of brazing a ferrous powder metal article comprising the steps of: contacting the part with a brazing alloy consisting essentially of copper and phosphorous, heating to a temperature in excess of the melting point of the brazing alloy but below about 1980° F., holding the temperature for a time sufficient to melt the alloy, and cooling to produce a metallurgical bond.
Claim 2
Independent Claim
63 words
A method of brazing a ferrous powder metal article comprising the steps of: contacting the part with a brazing alloy consisting essentially of copper and phosphorous, heating to a temperature in excess of the melting point of the brazing alloy but below about 1980° F., holding the temperature for a time sufficient to melt the alloy, and cooling to produce a metallurgical bond.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
15 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the brazing alloy additionally includes a quantity of silver.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
17 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the brazing alloy is a eutectic alloy of copper and phosphorous.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
16 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the temperature is within the range of about 1300°-1980° F.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
16 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the temperature is within the range of about 1850°-1900° F.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
30 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the article is contacted by another article to form a joint therebetween to be brazed and the brazing alloy is positioned at the joint.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
14 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the heating takes place in a reducing atmosphere.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
19 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the alloy is eutectic copper-phosphorous having a melting point of about 1310° F.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
25 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the alloy is in the form selected from the group consisting of shims, foils, paste, powder, wire and preforms.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
18 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the alloy is selected from the group consisting of Cu--P and Ag--Cu--P.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
40 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the alloy is selected from the group consisting of alloys containing about 92.88% Cu -- 7.12% P, 5% Ag -- 88.75% Cu -- 6.25% P, and 15% Ag -- 80% Cu -- 5% P.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
30 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the article is contacted by another article to form a joint therebetween to be brazed and the alloy is interspersed between the two articles.
Claim 14
Dependent Claim
15 words
The method of claim 12 wherein one of the articles is a powder metal article.
Claim 15
Dependent Claim
12 words
The method of claim 12 wherein both articles are powder metal articles.
