Abstract
Abstract Arylene sulfide polymers are brominated by contacting the polymer with a free oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst system comprising a copper ion, an alkali metal ion, and a bromide ion under reaction conditions which form a brominated arylene sulfide polymer. The brominated polymer has reduced flammability characteristics and is useful as a flame retardant additive as well as an ultraviolet stabilizer for polymers.
