Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a controlled density fill material and a method of using such fill material in, for examples, the backfilling of sewers, embankments, structures and utility trenches. The material includes Portland cement, fly ash and aggregates. The material, while having some properties of both, is neither a soil nor a concrete.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 12
Claim 1
Independent Claim 72 words
A controlled density fill material consisting essentially of 2% to 6% by weight of Portland cement, 2% to 10% by weight of fly ash, 70% to 90% by weight of aggregate and 5% to 15% by weight of water, the fill material being sufficiently placeable and flowable that tamping or vibrating is unnecessary and having a concrete-comparison 28-day compressive strength of less than 1400 psi, whereby the material may be easily re-excavated.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 72 words
A controlled density fill material consisting essentially of 2% to 6% by weight of Portland cement, 2% to 10% by weight of fly ash, 70% to 90% by weight of aggregate and 5% to 15% by weight of water, the fill material being sufficiently placeable and flowable that tamping or vibrating is unnecessary and having a concrete-comparison 28-day compressive strength of less than 1400 psi, whereby the material may be easily re-excavated.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 49 words
A controlled density fill material, according to claim 1, wherein the controlled density fill material consists essentially of 2% to 5% by weight of Portland cement, 2% to 9% by weight of fly ash, 74% to 86% by weight of aggregate and 8% to 13% by weight of water.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 49 words
A controlled density fill material, according to claim 1, wherein the controlled density fill material consists essentially of 4% to 6% by weight of Portland cement, 2% to 9% by weight of fly ash, 75% to 90% by weight of aggregate and 6% to 10% by weight of water.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 16 words
The controlled density fill material defined by claim 1, wherein the aggregate comprises a berm aggregate.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 16 words
The controlled density fill material defined by claim 1, wherein the aggregate comprises Maumee Estuary sand.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 23 words
The controlled density fill material defined by claim 1, wherein the concrete-comparison 28-day compressive strength is substantially between 100 psi and 300 psi.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
The controlled density fill material defined by claim 1, wherein the concrete-comparison 28-day compressive strength is about 200 psi.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 36 words
The controlled density fill material according to claim 1 which consists essentially of 4% by weight of Portland cement, 2.6% by weight of fly ash, 82.4% by weight of aggregate and 11% by weight of water.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 19 words
The controlled density fill material defined by claim 1, wherein the concrete-comparison 28-day compressive strength is about 1000 psi.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 34 words
The controlled density fill material of claim 1 which essentially comprises 4.8% by weight of Portland cement, 7.3% by weight of fly ash, 78.7% by weight of aggregate and 9.2% by weight of water.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim 35 words
The controlled density fill material according to claim 1 which essentially comprises 4.8% by weight of Portland cement, 4.8% by weight of fly ash, 82.9% by weight of aggregate and 7.5% by weight of water.
