Abstract

Abstract Method for applying protective sleeves to combustion-type photoflash lampsherein there is placed proximate a mold means a strip of organic plastic having a thickness of from about 0.3 to 0.8mm, a tough-plastic characteristic at a temperature of from about 160° to 200° C, a tough-elastic characteristic at a temperature of from about 90° to 125° C, and a freezing temperature of from about 65° to 70° C. The strip is heated to the tough-plastic temperature and drawn into the mold means to form a series of plastic cups which have a dimension slightly smaller than the lamps to be sleeved. When the temperature of the formed cups is in the tough-elastic range, they are expanded to be slightly larger than the lamps to be sleeved, and are then frozen. The lamps are then placed into the cups which are then heated to cause them to shrink-fit onto the lamps. The sleeved lamps are then severed from the residual plastic strip.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 230 words
The method of applying light-transmitting organic plastic shatterproof sleeves to the exterior of combustion-type photoflash lamps, which method comprises: a. placing proximate mold means having a configuration corresponding to but slightly smaller than the dimensions of the lamps to be sleeved, a strip of light-transmitting organic plastic having a thickness of from about 0.3mm to about 0.8mm, a tough-plastic characteristic within the temperature range A of from about 160° C to about 200° C, a tough-elastic characteristic within the temperature range B of from about 90° C to about 125° C, and a freezing temperature T E of from about 65° C to about 70° C; and heating said plastic strip to a temperature within said temperature range A and deep-drawing said heated organic plastic strip into said mold means to form organic plastic cups; b. heating the formed organic plastic cups to a temperature within said temperature range B, and enlarging the heated organic plastic cups to a dimension slightly larger than the dimensions of the lamps to be sleeved, and freezing said enlarged organic plastic cups by reducing the temperature of said enlarged cups to less than said temperature T E ; c. placing the lamps to be sleeved into said frozen cups; d. heating said cups to cause same to shring-fit onto and sleeve said lamps; and e. severing said sleeved lamps from residual organic plastic strip.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 33 words
The method as specified in claim 1, wherein said strip of organic plastic is fed from a supply reel to said mold means, and said deep-drawing into said mold means is by vacuum.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method as specified in claim 2, wherein each of said steps is performed wthin a manufacturing cycle to facilitate automation.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
The method as specified in claim 2, wherein said organic plastic strip is polyvinyl chloride having a thickness of about 0.5mm.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 22 words
The method as specified in claim 2, wherein four of said lamps are simultaneously sleeved and are conformed as a flashcube unit.
