Abstract

Abstract This invention relates to a process for the making of cold-hardening foams containing urethane groups by in-mold foaming. The need to use a relatively large number of additives like emulsifiers, stabilizers and activators can be eliminated by using certain silicon compounds of a specific formula. Foamable reaction mixtures using these compounds with polyethers, polyisocyanates, water and/or organic blowing agents, and catalysts will produce foams with properties acceptable for use in upholstery, cars, and furniture.

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 135 words
A process for the production of cold-hardening non-shrinking open-pored foams containing urethane groups by foaming in a mold a mixture comprising A) a polyether having at least two hydroxyl groups and a molecular weight in the range from 750 to 100,000, B) a polyisocyanate, C) a blowing agent, D) a catalyst and E) a silicon compound wherein the silicon compound used corresponds to the general formula ##STR7## in which R 1 and R 2 represent a substituted or unsubstituted monovalent hydrocarbon group, R 3 represents a C 2 -C 20 alkylene group, R 4 and R 5 represent a substituted or unsubstituted monovalent hydrocarbon group, in addition to which R 4 and R 5 may together form an alkylene ring which may be interrupted by heteroatoms, and m is an integer from 1 to 20.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 135 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 27 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said silicon compounds are used in quantities from about 0.01 to 5% by weight based on the quantity of polyether used.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 27 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said silicon compounds are used in quantities from about 0.05 to 2% by weight based on the quantity of polyether used.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 24 words
The process of claim 1 wherein R 1 and R 2 represent C 1 -C 6 alkyl or C 6 -C 8 aryl groups.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 14 words
The process of claim 1 wherein R 1 and R 2 are methyl groups.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 19 words
The process of claim 1 wherein R 4 and R 5 represent a C 1 -C 6 alkyl group.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 19 words
The process of claim 1 wherein R 4 and R 5 represent a C 5 -C 10 cycloalkylene radical.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 11 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said blowing agent is water.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 33 words
The process of claim 1 wherein said polyisocyanate is selected from the group consisting of 2,4- and 2,6-tolylene diisocyanate, polyphenyl polymethylene polyisocyanate and polyisocyanates containing carbodiimide, urethane, allophanate, isocyanurate, urea or biuret groups.
