Abstract
Abstract Lower aliphatic acids, e.g., isobutyric acid and esters, e.g., methyl isobutyrate are dehydrogenated in the presence of oxygen and a solid heterogenous dehydrogenation catalyst at temperatures in the range of from about 250 DEG to about 600 DEG C. The catalyst is the calcined residue of a base catalyst described as the mixed phosphates of iron and lead and a modifier component selected from the group consisting of manganese, uranium, praseodymium, calcium, strontium and chromium wherein such modifier is present in the amount of from about 0.1 to about 10% based on the weight of said base catalyst.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
164 words
A process for making unsaturated acids and esters by dehydrogenation of a compound defined by the formula ##STR2## wherein each of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 is selected from hydrogen and lower alkyl groups containing 1-4 carbon atoms, which process comprises contacting a feed-gas mixture comprising said component and oxygen at a temperature in the range of from about 250° to about 600° C. with a solid catalyst described as the calcined residue of a mixture of (a) a base component consisting essentially of a mixture of iron phosphate and lead phosphate wherein the atomic ratio of the metals is defined by 1 Fe/x Pb where x has a value of from about 0.1 to about 10, and (b) a modifier component selected from the group consisting of manganese, uranium, praseodymium, calcium, strontium and chromium wherein said modifier component is presents in amounts of from about 0.1 to about 10% based on the weight of the base component.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
18 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein x has a value of from about 0.5 to about 1.5.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
22 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the process is conducted at a temperature of from about 350° to about 500° C.

Claim 7
Dependent Claim
123 words
A process according to claim 1 wherein the catalyst is prepared by the steps of 1. preparing a solution of salts of iron and lead, 2. precipitating from said solution a mixture of ferric phosphate and lead phosphate, 3. adding a modifier component selected from the group consisting of manganese, uranium, praseodymium, calcium, strontium and chromium wherein said modifier will be present in an amount of from about 0.1 to about 10% based on the weight of the mixture of ferric phosphate and lead phosphate, 4. drying the modified precipitate, 5. adjusting the size and shape of the catalyst particles to that desired for process used, and 6. calcining said adjusted particles at a temperature of from about 400° to about 600° C.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
