A process for preparing a monoalkyl ether of a dihydric phenol which comprises contacting from 2 to 0.1 part by weight of a dihydric phenol with one part by weight of a lower alcohol having from 1 to 4 carbon atoms with a catalyst comprising aluminum, boron and phosphorus at a temperature of from 250° C. to 350° C., the atomic ratio of Al:B:P in said catalyst being from 1:1:2 to 1:3:4.
