Abstract

Abstract A field-effect liquid crystal display device has cell plates, the interior surfaces of which are covered with a film of synthetic resin. The grooves required for optical activity of the liquid crystal material are in the synthetic resin. The construction of the cell is such that all volatiles including moisture can be driven off by heating and the system can be tightly sealed to keep it free of moisture. A method of assembly is disclosed.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 11
Claim 1
Independent Claim 210 words
A process of preparation of a field-effect liquid crystal display device, comprising the steps of depositing a film of a synthetic resin on one surface of each of two glass plates each glass plate having at least one transparent electrode on said one surface, said film being thick enough to be grooved and thin enough to interfere only negligibly with the transmission of visible light therethrough, orienting said films by forming minute unidirectional grooves thereon, bringing said plates together with a spacer therebetween positioned adjacent the edges of said plates to form a cell, at least one of said plates being apertured, said plates being so positioned that said films are on adjacent surfaces and the orientations of said films are at right angles to each other, heating said plates and spacer to a temperature at which said spacer softens but at which said synthetic resin film is undamaged, said spacer being selected to have a softening point below the flow or degradation temperature of said synthetic film, pressing said plates together to cause said spacer to flow and conform to the surface of said plates, and maintaining said plates and spacer at said temperature until essentially all volatiles including moisture are driven off from the interior of said cell.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 210 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process as defined in claim 1 further comprising the step of sealing the plates together exterior to said spacer with a sealant having a low permeability to moisture.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 37 words
The process as defined in claim 1 further comprising the steps of introducing a dry liquid crystal composition between said plates and sealing said apertured plate with a sealant essentially impervious to moisture and free of volatiles.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 21 words
The process as defined in claim 1 wherein said synthetic resin film is of polytetrafluoroethylene and is deposited by vacuum evaporation.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 23 words
The process as defined in claim 1 wherein said synthetic resin film is of polyvinyl alcohol and is deposited from a solution thereof.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
The process as defined in claim 1 wherein said plates are compressed with sufficient force to decrease the thickness of said spacer by about 20 percent.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process as defined in claim 1, wherein said plates and spacer are heated at temperatures up to 260° C to remove volatiles from the interior of said cell.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process as defined in claim 1, wherein said synthetic resin is selected from the group consisting of fluoroplastic resins, polyvinyl alcohol, polyester resins, polyamides, silicones and polyimide polybenzimidazole.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 24 words
The process as defined in claim 1, wherein said synthetic resin film is selected from the group consisting of polytetrafluoroethylene, polyvinyl alcohol and polyester.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim 21 words
The process as defined in claim 1, wherein said spacer is selected from the group consisting of polyester and nylon resins.
