A grease composition consisting essentially of a major amount of a lubricating oil base vehicle and in an amount sufficient to thicken the base vehicle to grease consistency, an azoaryl compound of the formula: ##STR5## wherein R is an aliphatic hydrocarbyl radical of 16 to 22 carbon atoms, B is nitrogen or oxygen and Ar is an arylene radical selected from the class consisting of phenylene, naphthylene and diphenylene, said arylene radical being either unsubstituted or substituted on each aromatic ring with an aliphatic hydrocarbyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
