Abstract
Abstract Pretreating a first solid surface consisting of a material selected from the group consisting of unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) and fiberglass-filled poly(arylene sulfide) by mechanically roughening this first surface or pretreating with flame a first solid surface of unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) greatly increases the lap shear strength of an adhesive bond of such a first poly(arylene sulfide) surface to a second solid surface as compared to the same bond without pretreatment of the poly(arylene sulfide) surface.

Claim 1
Independent Claim
123 words
A method to bond a first solid surface to a second solid metal surface comprising a. coating said first solid surface with a material selected from the group consisting of unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) and fiberglass-filled poly(arylene sulfide) to produce a first poly(arylene sulfide) surface, b. submitting said first poly(arylene sulfide) surface to a pre-treatment selected from the group consisting of flame-treating the unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) surface for a period of time sufficient to dull the luster of the unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) surface but insufficient to substantially alter said surface by melting, pyrolyzing or burning thereof, mechanically roughening the unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) surface, and mechanically roughening the fiberglass-filled poly(arylene sulfide) surface, c. adhesive-bonding said first poly(arylene sulfide) surface to said second solid metal surface.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim
14 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said poly(arylene sulfide) is poly(p-phenylene sulfide).
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
18 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said first poly(arylene sulfide) surface is mechanically roughened by grit-blasting.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
22 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) surface is flame-treated by contacting it with a gas-oxygen flame.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein said pretreatment of said first poly(arylene sulfide) surface is carried out until said poly(arylene sulfide) surface becomes water-wettable.
Claim 7
Independent Claim
74 words
A method to bond a first solid surface to a second solid surface wherein a. a first solid surface consisting of unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) is flame-treated for a period of time sufficient to dull the luster of the unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) surface but insufficient to substantially alter said surface by melting, pyrolyzing or burning thereof, and b. said flame-treated first solid surface of unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) is adhesively bonded to said second solid surface.
Claim 8
Independent Claim
74 words
A method to bond a first solid surface to a second solid surface wherein a. a first solid surface consisting of unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) is flame-treated for a period of time sufficient to dull the luster of the unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) surface but insufficient to substantially alter said surface by melting, pyrolyzing or burning thereof, and b. said flame-treated first solid surface of unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) is adhesively bonded to said second solid surface.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
14 words
A method in accordance with claim 6 wherein said poly(arylene sulfide) is poly(p-phenylene sulfide).
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
25 words
A method in accordance with claim 6 wherein said flame treatment is carried out by contacting said unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) surface with a gas-oxygen flame.
Claim 11
Dependent Claim
28 words
A method in accordance with claim 6 wherein said flame treatment of said first unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) surface is carried out until said poly(arylene sulfide) surface becomes water-wettable.
Claim 12
Dependent Claim
89 words
A method in accordance with claim 6 wherein said second solid surface is produced by covering a solid surface with a layer of material selected from the group consisting of unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) and fiberglass-filled poly(arylene sulfide) to produce a second poly(arylene sulfide) surface, subjecting said second poly(arylene sulfide) surface to a pretreatment selected from the group consisting of flame-treating the poly(arylene sulfide) surface, mechanically roughening the unfilled poly(arylene sulfide) surface and mechanically roughening the fiberglass-filled poly(arylene sulfide) surface, such as to produce a pretreated second poly(arylene sulfide) surface.
Claim 13
Dependent Claim
16 words
A method in accordance with claim 6 wherein said second solid surface is a metal surface.
