Abstract

Abstract Monoethylenic monomers, including from about 1 to about 30% by weight of monoethylenic carboxylic acid, are placed in solution in a liquid mixture containing a low molecular weight polyhydric alcohol, and an anionic surfactant. This liquid mixture is dispersed in water and polymerized at an elevated polymerization temperature using agitation and in the presence of a free radical polymerization catalyst. The dispersion of polymer particles is then at least partially neutralized, preferably with ammonia or an amine to form an aqueous dispersion which is stable in the absence of emulsifying agent and which is useful in coating.
