In a bonding tool having a shank and a tapered work end including a narrow bonding tip for holding a wire against a surface to which it is to be bonded, the improvement comprising: a rectangular wire guide opening, which in transverse section is of relatively narrow width and large height, extending through the work end from the rear of the tool to a position adjacent to the bonding tip, whereby bonding wire can be fed and guided from the rear of the tool to the bonding tip over a variety of different angles.
