Abstract
Abstract The invention concerns heating an asphalt pavement in successive stages during time-spaced intervals. This permits the asphalt to be heated to its softening temperature without being overheated, and also permits the heat to penetrate deeply into the asphalt by conduction to soften the asphalt to a substantial depth (e.g. 1 inch or more). The asphalt is then scarified to a depth not greater than the depth to which it has been softened, and the scarified asphalt is then worked into a trafficable surface.
