Sheet feeding apparatus

Claim 2

A sheet feeding apparatus for feeding sheets from a stack comprising: means for supporting said stack of said sheets; means for feeding said sheets from said stack; means for registering the lead edge of said stack on said support means, said registration means having a registration surface for engagement by said stack; means for positioning said registration surface in an extended position for loading said stack against said surface; means for moving said registration surface to a retracted position; said stack support means comprising a stack support drawer which is movable between an extended position to provide across to said stack, and an operative position for feeding sheets from said stack; said means for positioning said surface in said extended position being responsive to the movement of said drawer to said extended position; said registration means comprising a pivotally mounted loading baffle; said feeding means being mounted for pivotal movement against said stack for feeding said sheets and said registration means being arranged to pivot conjointly with said feeding means; means for disengaging said feeding means from said stack in response to said drawer being moved to said extended position, said disengaging means being operative to pivot said feeding means out of contact with said stack; and means for supporting said feeding means for movement with said drawer to said extended position.

Claim 3

An apparatus as in claim 1, wherein said disengaging means comprises a stationary cam and a follower secured to said pivoting feeding means.

Claim 4

An apparatus as in claim 2, wherein said feeding means comprises a friction retard feeding and separating means including a belt feeder engaging the edge of said stack and a retard member having a finitely curved frictional retard surface deformably engaging said feed belt in an unsupported region to provide a sheet queing throat.

Claim 5

An apparatus as in claim 3, wherein said cam and follower comprise said means for positioning said registration surface in said extended position.

Claim 6

An apparatus as in claim 4, further including side guide means supported by said drawer for engaging the sides of said stack, at least one of said side guides being adjustable to account for differing sizes.

Claim 7

A reproducing apparatus comprising: means for forming an image on a copy sheet; means for supporting a stack of said sheets; means for feeding said sheets from said stack to said image forming means; means for registering the lead edge of said stack on said support means, said registration means having a registration surface for engagement by said stack; means for positioning said registration surface in an extended position for loading said stack against said surface; means for moving said registration surface to a retracted position; said stack support means comprising a stack support drawer which is movable between an extended position to provide access to said stack, and an operative position for feeding sheets from said stack; said means for positioning said surface in said extended position being responsive to the movement of said drawer to said extended position; said registration means comprising a pivotally mounted loading baffle; said feeding means being mounted for pivotal movement against said stack for feeding said sheets and said registration means being arranged to pivot conjointly with said feeding means; means for disengaging said feeding means from said stack in response to said drawer being moved to said extended position, said disengaging means being operative to pivot said feeding means out of contact with said stack; and means for supporting said feeding means for movement with said drawer to said extended position.

Claim 8

A reproducing apparatus comprising: means for forming an image on a copy sheet; means for supporting a stack of said sheets; means for feeding said sheets from said stack to said image forming means; means for registering the lead edge of said stack on said support means, said registration means having a registration surface for engagement by said stack; means for positioning said registration surface in an extended position for loading said stack against said surface; means for moving said registration surface to a retracted position; said stack support means comprising a stack support drawer which is movable between an extended position to provide access to said stack, and an operative position for feeding sheets from said stack; said means for positioning said surface in said extended position being responsive to the movement of said drawer to said extended position; said registration means comprising a pivotally mounted loading baffle; said feeding means being mounted for pivotal movement against said stack for feeding said sheets and said registration means being arranged to pivot conjointly with said feeding means; means for disengaging said feeding means from said stack in response to said drawer being moved to said extended position, said disengaging means being operative to pivot said feeding means out of contact with said stack; and means for supporting said feeding means for movement with said drawer to said extended position.

Claim 9

An apparatus as in claim 6, wherein said disengaging means comprises a stationary cam and a follower secured to said pivoting feeding means.

Claim 10

An apparatus as in claim 7, wherein said feeding means comprises a friction retard feeding and separating means including a belt feeder engaging the edge of said stack and a retard member having a finitely curved frictional retard surface deformably engaging said feed belt in an unsupported region to provide a sheet queing throat.

Claim 11

An apparatus as in claim 8, wherein said cam and follower comprise said means for positioning said registration surface in said extended position.

Claim 12

An apparatus as in claim 9, further including side guide means supported by said drawer for engaging the sides of said stack, at least one of said side guides being adjustable to account for differing sheet sizes.

Claim 13

An apparatus as in claim 10, wherein said reproducing apparatus comprises an electrostatographic reproducing machine wherein said imaging means includes: an imaging member; means for forming an electrostatic image upon said imaging member; means for developing said electrostatic image; and means for transferring said developed image from said imaging member to said sheet.

Claim 14

A sheet feeding apparatus for feeding sheets from a stack comprising: means for supporting said stack of sheets, said support means comprising a drawer movable between an extended position for allowing access to said stack an operative position for feeding sheets from said stack, said drawer having a surface for supporting said stack; means for feeding sheets from said stack; means for driving said feeding means when said drawer is in said operative position; means for disengaging said driving means from said feeding means when said drawer is in said extended position; and means for sensing both the engagement of said driving means to said feeding means and the presence of said sheets upon said drawer.

Claim 15

A sheet feeding apparatus for feeding sheets from a stack comprising: means for supporting said stack of sheets, said support means comprising a drawer movable between an extended position for allowing access to said stack an operative position for feeding sheets from said stack, said drawer having a surface for supporting said stack; means for feeding sheets from said stack; means for driving said feeding means when said drawer is in said operative position; means for disengaging said driving means from said feeding means when said drawer is in said extended position; and means for sensing both the engagement of said driving means to said feeding means and the presence of said sheets upon said drawer.

Claim 16

An apparatus as in claim 12, including means for supporting said feeding means for movement with said drawer to said extended position.

Claim 17

An apparatus as in claim 13, wherein said sensing means comprises a single switch actuator acting upon a switch and, wherein said switch actuator is secured to said movable drawer and said switch is mounted in a stationary position in said apparatus, and wherein said switch actuator is positioned to engage said switch only when said drawer is in said operative position, and said drive means is engaged.

Claim 18

An apparatus as in claim 14, wherein said switch actuator comprises a lever engaging said switch in said operative position, said lever being pivotally mounted to said drawer below said support surface and wherein an end of said lever is biased to protrude through a slot in said support surface when no sheets are present, whereby when a stack of sheets is present said lever is depressed so as to actuate said switch if said drawer is in said operative position and said drive means is engaged.

Claim 19

A sheet feeding apparatus adapted to feed sheets having curled edges from a stack of said sheets, said apparatus comprising: means for feeding a sheet from said stack along a desired sheet feed path; guide means for guiding said sheet as it is fed along said path, said guide means including means for flattening the curled edges of said sheet, said guide means comprising a chute defined by spaced apart first and second guide members extending transversely across said sheet, the transverse ends of said guide members at the entrance portion of said chute being spaced apart to provide a first gap wide enough to receive said curled sheet edges, and the middles of said guide plates at said entrance portion of said chute being spaced apart to provide a second gap smaller than said first gap.

Claim 20

A sheet feeding apparatus adapted to feed sheets having curled edges from a stack of said sheets, said apparatus comprising: means for feeding a sheet from said stack along a desired sheet feed path; guide means for guiding said sheet as it is fed along said path, said guide means including means for flattening the curled edges of said sheet, said guide means comprising a chute defined by spaced apart first and second guide members extending transversely across said sheet, the transverse ends of said guide members at the entrance portion of said chute being spaced apart to provide a first gap wide enough to receive said curled sheet edges, and the middles of said guide plates at said entrance portion of said chute being spaced apart to provide a second gap smaller than said first gap.

Claim 21

An apparatus as in claim 16, wherein said flattening means comprises downstream portions of said guide members wherein there is a transition in the spacing of said members at their ends from said first gap to said second gap.

Claim 22

An apparatus as in claim 17, wherein said feed means is positioned to engage the leading edge of the stack, and wherein each of said guide members extend outwardly on opposing sides of said feeding means.

Claim 23

An apparatus as in claim 18, wherein said feeding means is mounted to pivot against said stack and wherein said guide members are mounted to pivot with said feeding means.

Claim 24

An apparatus as in claim 19, wherein said feeding means comprises a friction retard feeding and separating means including a belt feeder engaging said edge of said stack and a retard member having a finitely curved frictional retard surface deformably engaging said feed belt in an unsupported region to provide a sheet queing throat.

Claim 25

An apparatus as in claim 20, wherein said first guide member includes dog-eared portions at its sheet entrance corners, and is positioned about said sheet, and wherein said sheets have upwardly curled edges.

Claim 26

An apparatus as in claim 21, wherein said sheet feeding apparatus comprises part of a reproducing machine and wherein said reproducing means further includes means for forming an image on said sheets.

Claim 27

An apparatus as in claim 22, wherein said reproducing machine comprises an electrostatographic reproducing machine wherein said imaging means includes an imaging member means for forming an electrostatic image upon said imaging means, means for developing said electrostatic image, and means for transferring said developed image from said imaging member to said sheet.
