A compound of formula (I) or a pharmaceutically aceptable salt thereof ##SPC4## wherein R 1 is mercapto or lower alkylthio and R 2 is amino or hydrogen, or R 1 is amino and R 2 is hydroxy, provided that whenever R 1 is mercapto or methylthio, R 2 is amino, said compound having a β-configuration regarding the linkage between the purine and D-arabinofuranosyl moiety.
