Abstract

Abstract Production of an activated type alumina from aluminum dross by digestion with water, preferably pressurized. The peculiar properties associated with trace compounds present in the product make it useful for the recovery of noxious effluents from furnacing processes, including those burning fossil fuels and those used for smelting both aluminum and steel, wherein the alumina beneficially incorporates in the metallurgical flux.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 129 words
The process for producing activated alumina from dross containing aluminum particles, alumina and impurities comprising: charging said dross onto a layer of molten halide salts underlain by a layer of molten aluminum in a holding furnace, whereby a portion of the aluminum entrained within the dross enters the aluminum layer and the alumina and impurities are entrained in the halide flux layer; separating said dross from said molten aluminum; digesting said dross with hot water to at least partially dissolve halide salts and other soluble impurities and decompose insoluble impurities; separating remaining aluminum particles and the purified alumina from said water as separate fractions; drying said alumina to produce an activated alumina; and crystallizing and drying said halide salts from said water, and returning same to said holding furnace.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 129 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
The process as claimed in claim 1, wherein said digestion step is at temperatures above the boiling point of the solution in which the halide salts are dissolved, and said digestion is conducted above atmospheric pressure.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 39 words
The process as claimed in claim 1, and additionally comprising maintaining up to 5% by weight of sodium aluminate in the hot water used to dissolve the halide flux, to assist in the decomposition of insoluble nitrides and carbides.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 27 words
The process as claimed in claim 1, and additionally comprising washing said digested alumina with hot water prior to drying same to remove any residual, soluble impurities.
