Abstract

Abstract A method and apparatus for molding rubber to an article, e.g. a two-color rubber sole onto a lasted upper of an article of footwear, are disclosed. Unvulcanized rubber of one color is placed into a mold cavity bounded by the article, openable peripheral side ring means, and a movable mold member, e.g. a sole plate, located opposite the article. The movable mold member is provided with a peripheral outwardly extending lip for forming, in the rubber flash escaping around the periphery of the movable mold member, a peripherally extending weakened region. A peripherally extending groove is also provided in the movable mold member adjacent the lip to the side of the latter facing away from the article, for forming the flash rubber escaping past the lip into a bead. In the method, a first rubber to be molded is introduced into the cavity and the movable mold member is then advanced toward the article until the first rubber is spread against the article. After the first rubber has partially set and become vulcanized to the article, e.g. as a midsole component, the movable mold member is retracted away from the article while the side ring means remain closed, which simultaneously entrains the bead in the groove and thus causes the rubber flash to be torn along the weakened region so as to separate the bead from the remaining molded portion of the first rubber. With the side ring means still remaining closed, the second rubber is now introduced into the cavity, whereupon the movable mold member is again advanced to spread the second rubber against the first rubber. During the second molding stage, the previously formed bead, which is still in the groove, serves as a flash-limiting sealing member.

The method according to claim 1, wherein the peripheral face of said movable mold member to the side of said lip facing in the direction toward said article is slanted inwardly away from said side wall means, the peripheral flange of said first-named rubber formed in that region during the first molding operation thereby decreasing in thickness toward, and having an inner surface slanting outwardly as viewed in the direction of, said weakened region, whereby said additional rubber, when spread during the second advance of said movable mold member, is forced against said slanted inner surface of said flange and presses the latter tightly against said side wall means so as to prevent any of said additional rubber from being deposited on and vulcanized to the outer surface of said flange.
